Training for Noobies/Fitness

Hey all,

I'm new to these boards, but I have been browsing on and off for the past few months. There is a wealth of information on these boards, from some very good people.

Anyways, basically, I have just finished my A-levels at college (I'm now 19). My fitness is very poor at the moment. I can do the 3-Miler in 25 mins and 1.5-Miler in 12 mins (not very good I know, but I have not trained for the past 2yrs).

I've always wanted to join the Marines, but I also wanted to do my A-levels first for something to fall back on. When I was 16, I could do the 3-Miler in under 20 mins and the 1.5-Miler in under 8:30 mins, 60 push ups and 80 sit ups in 2 mins. I was certainly fit enough to join the Marines back then.

All I really want to know is would the Potential Royal Marines Fitness Schedule be suitable for me, and your "opinions" on whether or not I could be ready for PRMC by March 2005 if I followed this schedule?

If your talking about the little leaflet from the AFCO then thats not suitable for anyone, look at the threads on the forum. Loads of sprinting, a few long runs a week (about 5 miles) and do your press ups, sit ups and pull ups everyday (apart from rest day).

Nick definitely a bad choice :wink:

Seriously, do a search for anything along the lines of training schedules, programmes, etc etc, and you'll find no end of information. No the little green leaflet they give you at the AFCO won't be enough, as a guideline I'd say three CV plus three body-weight exercise sessions a week; SEARCH...it will help you no end, I promis :wink:

You're quite the speller there ;)

Anyway, to add to what Druadan and Gunn said go this site here. It's an absolute goldmine; it's full of nutrition advice, training tips, running plans, circuit programs, how the body adapts to training and so forth. Though I think the AFCO plan is pretty OK. It provides a good framework to build upon.

i agree with druadan and gunn, but only because of the time scale, you wont be able to get fit enough in three months. i used the little booklet from the afco but i gave it 7 months taking it to a peak every 8 weeks and it was a great way of compounding fitness. for somone just starting training it is a great programme as it starts off gradual, it also costs nothing as you can do it at home and around where you live, the only downside is that you need alot of motivation to train alone.as i got closer to my prmc i was comfortably running 6 miles in 40 minutes. and i think it was a great help to passing prmc first time, also i was quite pleased with my scores:
press-ups - 60
sit-ups - 76
pull-ups - 6
bleep test - 12.6
three miler - pass (came 3rd)
assault course - 3:05
i also agree with druadan and gunn about the sprinting that is a must and you need to be concentrating on that, i was doing double what the book said and it helped me alot in gym test 2 when your blowing out your ass :D .

I've got a question. Does being able to run a distance in a decent time mean a person should get a decent bleep test score?

Reason I ask is I had 8:35 in my PJFT and I'm quite capable of getting a sub forty minute time for 6 miles and around 18-19 minutes for 3 miles, however, I managed to score 11 on the bleep test, which is pretty dismal.

Hi guys,

Thank you for your advice, much appreciated. So I gather it may not be possible to be fit enough to try for PRMC by March? - shame, but I will give it my best I guess :lol:

Also, is there anyway to change your user name once you have joined? When I joined, I was in a rush and RMCommando was the first thing I thought of and used that - I regret it now though :oops:

PM Beast, apologise for upsetting his busy schedule, I'm sure he'll be happy to change it! Also, PRMC in late March isn't unforeseeable, if all you've got to crack is the running then I'd say with a lot of hard work it's possible.

Decent bleep-test usually equates to decent assault course time, so the training team told us way back when. Distance running and VO2 max are different kettles of fish altogether.
