As with most of these questions, the first decision is to decide what YOU want to do in terms of career, the rest will follow automatically. There isn't a 'best' other than what is best for you personally.

That said, the RLC is the largest organisation in the armed forces and as such there is a huge range of postings and masses of promotion prospects. Remember though there are also a huge range of crap postings. You do have the option of going for a green, maroon or even a sand coloured lid (attached to 22).

As for Ammo Tech, remember the old saying; if at first you don't succeed, bomb disposal probably isn't for you!

Well, mainly all been said . . . Id go for the RLC - having served in the RLC and Ord before that I am biased - none the less, the amount of trades vary from infantryman (pioneer andcommand/airborne) through normal b and a trades and tech trades, promotion is good and you really do have ALL the worl as your oyster. Reme, being a good corps, no doubt, have limited postings and bad promotion (reccy mechs only have the board upto S/Sgt I believe).

Though things have probably changed since 1984 when I did it I would rather take the REME route. I originally joined the then RAOC as a potential AT and passed the selection course (good fun, especially the psych tests!). By then I'd worked at CAD Kineton for a few months in the Labs (processing kit in and out of the depot) - It was mind-numbingly boring. I stand to be corrected if this has changed, but it definitely put me off going on to be an AT.

I rebadged to REME and became a Radar Tech. A good trade, but perhaps one of the other tech trades might have been better. It certainly hasn't harmed me now that I'm out, I'm using the skills I learnt in an interesting job.

REME v RLC

Post by The Inniskilling Dragoon »

how can you possibley compare the REME to the RLC???? They are completely different units, no unit is better than another, we all need each other, i constantly hear crowes/recruits/squaddie wannabees banging on about whos the best, and its stupid.
On a battlefield the Tanks cant move forward without the Inf, they cant assault without the mutual spt from the tanks, but we cant move through a mine field unless the Engers clear it for us, if we break down we need the REME to fix us again, and we would be f***ed without the RLC to supply us with fuel, water, ammo etc etc etc. Do i need to mention the use of the Airborne,RAMC,SAS,SF,RA and all the rest of the Arms and services involved? er no i dont! so if you want to wear a certain cap badge or be a particular tradesman, get on and do it because as i said we're all the same and need each other as much as the rest of the army does
