PRMC was a dream compared to foundation. All this week we've been bollocked from dawn to dusk, little sleep and very hard phys and hours upon hours of ironing and polishing (only to be told that it's honking and have it thrown out of your locker). Maybe i'm mad but i'm still desparate to stay, knowing that it's all for a reason. All the bullsh*t is to discipline you and make you an effective, hygienic fighter. Eventually we'll finish all the rubbish and get treated more like humans, but for now we're robots (as our Coproral says, 'when nods start thinking, things go wrong). PRMC was nothing on foundation, but then again civvie life was nothing on becoming a Marine. :D

now you might have been sexier than me when i had a shaved head and dont have a beer gut...but everyone has their own opinions...

i totally agree with the count...i did not enjoy the atmosphere of the camp, not just the whole thing about the women...but just the whole "is this gonna be it" mentality...i totally underestimated training and i withdrew myself midway through day one(I knew the night before i'd be going home and it just totally defeated me)...i then proceeded to go down to torbay and have a 400 pound pissup...and i dont feel so bad about it as i know its not for me now...i hold more respect now for the royal marine as i did before...and i hardly even touched the training.

Training

Post by Oakers »

Remember lads, those of you that are there, it's training it's not supposed to be swings and roundabouts. Stick at it as it does get better not because you're training team decide to start going easier on you but because you change, your outlook changes and you get to a point where you are so switched on that you don't make mistakes and you don't get picked up anymore.
You decide whether you pass out or not barring injury.
You also need to remember that the training team aren't doing anything to you that wasn't done to them and they would never ask anything of you that they weren't capable of doing or had done themselves.

Those of you that have had a shot and didn't make it or didn't want it, then if you're going to fall at the first hurdle then you're not what the Corps wants or needs but don't feel ashamed. It's not for everyone, in fact it's for very few and as someone said earlier it's not easy to say "it's not for me". Be proud that you had the guts to give it a shot.

Whatever your situation fellas, good luck.

BTW:- the bottom field was one of most unenjoyable experiences in my entire life.

They were really looking for maximums in almost everything.
Count, can you now see why I made such a fuss about some peoples training levels? I wasn't trying to be the big I am, I was offering some advice.

Sorry its not for you - perhaps you'll have better luck convincing others of the level of preparation they need to reach.

p.s. sorry to edit your quote but it was just too long.

It's easy to be over confident especially if you don't know what your letting youself in for. I did heed alot of the advice given to me by the experienced members of the forum.

I'm planning to wait a year and give it another go, In the mean time I will try and get rid of my Ego and try and adjust a bit more mentaly.

I certainly realise my Job sucks since getting back on the grindstone and I would someday like to try for the Green Beret just at the moment I don't feel ready.

I've already sent a letter to the AFCO explaining my decision, hopefully this time next year I'll feel a little more prepared.

Count

Don't give it up so soon. Me and Dan did the same prmc and we both had our doubts at the end. When we were waiting for our results, I was thinking "I want to have passed but do I really want to join?" A few days later I realised that I do - it still took me a week to decide to go to the afco - and I hopefully join on monday (due to Irish father security clearance is taking longer than normal so I may have to wait a few more weeks), so don't write it off straight away, give yourself some time to think about it or you may regret it for a long time.

Well im back from my PRMC(early as you may of noticed). The reason for my leaving the course is because the train journey i was sick multiple times and it didnt stop when i was there. Most of the day was spent running to the toilets much to the other candidates laughter  . The next day was no different but i decided to 'give it a go' anyway. Gym test 1 was as expected but i performed miserably . I had trained the same way so nothing was new but my scores were 'bloody awfull'. Managed to not be sick (thou many others were, some even passed out  ) and proceeded to the swimming test. Quick jump off the board and into the changing room where i had to sit down through 'tunnel vision' which had materialised. The next couple of hours where spent going to lectures and resting and i drank lots of fluids and tried to eat some food before 'the bottom field'. Time came to get into the corridor but i still felt dizzy and sick. A look in the mirror revealed i was pale white(whiter than my pale white self anyway). I decided to pull myself off the course as to not waste the staffs and my time by carrying on. I was dizzy walking to the corporals office nevermind running all over the place for 2 hours. Decided to use the reason of not physically prepared instead of being sick(as they may view it as an excuse to go home).

A few tips i gained thou.
- Do as everyone else does e.g if they have tucked in there shirts you do the same . 5 people decided not to do this and we all ended up doing 50 pressups

-An extension to the above is too look for suck people and 'inspect' everyone in your room as we did. Thou the arses in the other rooms did not.

- When anywhere infront of any member of CTC do not 'fidget' e.g scratch your nose, sniffled, wipe sweat of move your head unless its to look at a corporal demonstrating something. Wallsand doors will not fall down so dont lean on them as you will be given more pressups. Hands in pockets is also another no no.

-Do not eat in the CTC's staff or the kings sqaud area when eating scran. One PRMC did so and was soon up outside recieving a good beasting for sitting with the kings sqaud. Nobody told him because they senced what was coming,he was also stupid for not seeing the sign

-Pressups are to be done down the the fist. The knuckles are to be on the floor unlike the 'old method' where the knuckles where vertical.

-They are very picky about any task you do. When doing situps your hands must touch your head at all times. Move one hand off a little and its spotted and 2 deducted. Grab your ears as i did and you will be ok,despite the laughter from the PTI's :D

-Check your boots all over even down to the laces and polish them well.

-Clean your cutlery well as there is no reason not to and you will be given pressups.

-Pressups require your arms are tottally by your side and no 'flaring' allowed. Your body ust remain straight all the time e.g the top of your body must also go up with your 'arse' not body followed by arse method.

-Avoid 'cum' faces when doing any exercise as the corporals will shout some profanity at you mainly with reference to 'shooting your load'

-Swimming trunks not shorts, you will be given 2 pressups for every member who is wearing shorts.A little math says that 40 people means 80 pressups. Those wearing trunks didnt have to do this.

-There was a saying around here like this "2 speeds at CTC full speed and total stop". This is no exageration,no jogging was ever done (accept for the 3 mile run i guess) and you run (and i quote the corporal now) "as fast as f@#k*ing possible" regardless of what your doing/feeling. Id advice basing your CV workout on sprinting and doing 2 runs a week of about 4 miles. Also if you dont feel sick when preparing for your PRMC
when doing exercise your not doing it right.

-When getting scran take your plate to the food not the food to the plate. Candidates spilled food on the counter and were sent to the back of the 200+ long line. Also one 'sort' of food e.b breakfast is a full english OR cereal not both.

-Do as your told as soon as possible and listen carefully and do exactly that. We were givem 30 pressups because 3 people didnt fill there bottles on the first day. After the 30 some people stood up and we did another 30.

The requirements they expect are as follows: bleep test 11 +. Pullups 6 and nothing below. Pressups 50+. Sit ups 70-80. The assault course is now 3.20 .

Ive also decided the marines are not for me at this moment in time as most PRMC candidates where 20 years old and only 2-3 were 18 like myself. Ive decided to give it another 'crack' in 6-24 months time when ive experienced more 'civvy' life, and once my legs have no 'aches or pains'. Definatly had a good time even when getting pressups and having to smile and say hello to people who went past.

Welcome back Cronkilla - unlucky with the sickness mate, my lad Sam suffered the same at his first attempt, I think nerves probably kick in a lot, as he is only a baby like your goodself.

The physical standards seem to have gone upwards from before, probably not short of volunteers after GW2.

I know your a bright chap Cronkilla so think your options through before going 'firm' on a decision about the timescale, plus you could always become a pongo and achieve the green lid by that route!!!

Keep smiling.

Contractor, I'm a newbie so would you explain the pongo route and what exactly is a pongo (I'm guessing a jumper).

My son is only 16 and wants to be a Royal but we also looked at the Army school - I can't remember the name now- because it would allow him to mature a little more - emotionally and physically. Would it be possible to become a RM via the army?

I'm not sure that waiting to join is such a bad thing. I notice that younger kids though built like a brick sh1t house like my son is still don't have that muscle toughness that comes with maturity.
