I can't think of anything from 82 which would have been impossible with women? Most of the Falklands operations were recce work, with a sprinkling of raids. Though obvioulsy as I said before this doesn't mean women would have been as effective team members as men, but there wasn't anything specific about 1982 with regards to this. Uness you're thinking of something else?

And Jim, I agree with you completely about women working with UKSF, predominantly where intelligence is involved. I'm just saying that women shouldn't be allowed into SF units themselves.

No Tony you haven't gone too far, however if you ever bump into Mrs H you may regret being accurate in your opinion! 8)

Here's one to debate........

Could Tessa Sanderson [remember her?] pass selection?

Times are changing, so who knows whats around the corner! At one point in time Irish etc were discriminated against and couldnt even drink in certain bars.......... Times are changing, so watch this space!

Aye,

Oooooo can of worms indeed. For what its worth i'll add my views.
Firstly, women need to be front line troops long before anyone will consider them as SF. Not that im saying women should be front line.
Ive met some evil type women in my time but im not too sure whether a women has the killer instinct of men (nature indeed). They would want to think first and maybe discuss things a little. Personally I couldnt see a woman going through what the Marines and Paras did in the Falklands (from everything ive read)...
Right here is the one that may get me lynched. I think that women are far too tempramental and unpredictable to be front line. One minute they're fine, next minute they're crying during Eastenders. There are just certain things that women are not equiped to deal with. (And Yes I agree there are a lot of women who are fitter, quicker and stronger then me)
I believe there are roles for women in the forces just not SF and frontline....Have I just lined myself up for the firing squad

Eddie Izzard as lead scout then? Just keep him in front, we'll know where his hands are and what they're doing. :-?

'Nice' Skirts would be standard issue, obviously only if they came in a series of pastel shades and matched the boots :D

dont worry, i have an instinct to kill :) ask my friends!
yes tony, u went too far. Do NOT joke about that with women! not all women are unpredictable and cry easily either. you guys r just stereotypin us.
Anyway there was a time when the SAS didn't let homosexual men in either but people protested and it was taken to the european court and now they do. Who's to say this can't happen again?

So....we should lower the standard of the SAS and let in women just cos the court of Human Rights says we should..Equality for equalitys sake, jeeus is nothing sacred these days, women just dont wanna feel left out, "well if they can do it so can I".....hmppp indeed :(

Not to fan the flames at all (well, maybe a little) but why is is that women are so determined to have equality in the most serious of occupations, but aren't out there campaigning to have women playing on rugby or football teams?

In Canada, women are permitted to join the Infantry but their standards are set lower. This makes absolutely no sense - will the enemy wait around because women aren't able to cover as much ground? Do they get issued smaller, lighter bullets? I've heard horror stories from people in the Canadian Forces about how women are treated on course. One course had a women as the honour graduate even though she lacked the upper body strength to cock the .50 cal machinegun.

If there were no double standards and women were expected to perform at the same level as the men I suspect that much of the hostility towards women in the combat arms would disappear. However, as Geoff Hoon put it, the military should not be a sociological experiment to the possible detriment of the nation's security.

Completely agree. You never see women moaning or campaigning to become a Binman and I certainly dont see many of them digging up the motorways....even though they are probably allowed to...
They'll be campaigning that its wrong for blokes to have their own toilets soon.. :-?
