I haven't seen it, but apparantely the film is not very faithful to the real life Van Helsing.
Van Helsing was a real man who slayed Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and several werewolves in the 19th century. He is the reason there are no monsters nowadays.

Okay, the name Van Helsing comes from Bram Stokers book: Dracula.. (so no, van helsing is not real)
He wrote the story and named the main character, who kills Dracula Van Helsing.. actually, the full name is Abraham Van Halsing, Van Helsing being the surname.. but the movie never mentions Abraham. So it can't be too true to brams novel..
Oh, another interesting fact, Bram Stoker is actually called Abraham Stoker, he just shortened it to Bram.
I know so much about this as i used to live in cruden bay, bram stoker used to visit cruden bay alot, and he wrote the story while staying in the killie (the kilmarnock arms, a hotel on the "high street"). As a kid, we used to be terrified of slains castle, as it was said dracula stayed there..
..but that was all fictional and came from bram stokers novel.
