I have just read the thread about Pongos trying to poach the corps.
I have a theory about the motivation behind this. Yes as ever our Government wants cheaper armed forces and greater flexibility etc.
Putting all Esprit de Corps aside and thinking practically I believe that IF the British Army were to ever incorperate RM into it's ORBAT then it would help the Commando forces as a whole.
Since RM ever existed it has provided exemplary sevrice to the UK. However, in light of recent conflicts and troop and equipment shortages the RM as we know it may not exist in the next 50 years.
If Army soldiers were allowed to show an interest of training as a commando from day 1 there would be a lot more potential recruits for CDO forces. I say this looking at the opt out rate at ctc. Booties might say that this would produce an inferior soldier. Maybe that would be true? Who knows? If we were to allow regular infantry men to attempt the all arms course as a matter of course then perhaps there would be less injury/drop out rate and perhaps a stronger unit as a whole and would save money for the correct equipment/funding.
I'm not sure if this would work but it's quite an interesting idea. Look at 4 Bn RAR.
This process would take decades if it were to go ahead and become an effective fighting force. We would just need the experience of Bootnecks to help speed this along. BUT then there is ESPRIT DE CORPS.

Goose the idea that the Corps should become part of the Army is in itself the problem. The fact that the Corps is what it is today is the division between the armed forces and the need for an elite that is on a different level of training and in the way it works.
Join the Army son which regiment do you want to be in..... The Problem.
The Paras have exactly the same problem which are you in I'm 3 Para we're the best, still a great bunch but they even fight each other. If the Army worked the same way the Corps worked then integration would be easy. Then that is not the way RM's work, today he could be 41, tommorow he could be 42 then next year he could be on ship. One cap badge one Corps and many places to work always together as part of the family. Then RM has to work with everyone else Navy Air Force and Army.
Oh yes don't forget the Corps works with two rule books, and boy can that be a pain if they can't charge you for something with one they turn to the other, Navy and Army.
So why integrate, yes save money, but would you? People who go to be RM have made the choice and still they loose more than half of all potentials passing into hell. So if you had a bigger pot would you not just have a bigger fall off rate. Oh yes you could make it easier for them, then you wouldn't have RM Commandos.
Leave well alone and ensure we have what is still considered by most of the world to be an elite so we can still have our bit of reasurance that we have an effective Armed force which if divided is effective at many different levels.

Ratso touched on the one subject that makes the Corps different, one moment you are in a Commando Unit then you could be on H.M Ships or you could be doing a sneaky beaky some where around the world. Its the flexability and diversity that makes a Marine what he is,the way you intergrate with other units but still hold onto your identity that makes it special.Staying in one place all the time can breed complacancy and make you switch off, nearly all ex booties I know spent their time on different drafts and moved about, apart from those strange ones that lived in the cold white stuff!
Remember LIFE is not a dress rehersal for anything else!

This has been bought up before on quite a few occasions.
You join the Marines. Not the Army.
Pride, elitism, it's what all Bootnecks are taught and it never goes away.
Perce infantry regiments are 100% different. They join a Battalion and most never leave it. No thank you very much I enjoyed getting drafted every couple of years. And you knew whatever unit or Ship you went to there would be familar faces but also a lot of future Oppos to have a runashore with as time went on.
If it works, leave it.
