How long will it be untill the monarchy is abolished?
How long will it be untill the monarchy is abolished?
The signs are there that they will soon be gone imho, but how long do you think the royal family will survive?
If i have anything to do with it they'll be there forever, as in my opinion the monarchy is what sets us apart from many other countrys. Its a symbol of National History and pride and i for one would rather see the United Kingdom blown to bits rather than give up its heritage.

That depends upon the Royals themselves, they certainly have been making a pigs ear of it in recent years. I doubt whether Charles will ever be King George VII as his title would be known unless Camilla becomes his Consort and not Queen.
I really don't know what you could replace the Monarchy with though as it seems to have held us in good stead for 1200+ years apart from the Cromwellian disaster.
I mean does anyone REALLY want a George W Bush in charge, answers on a postcard to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington DC

I dont actually want them abolished as i believe they can form a usefull constitutional safeguard against dictatorships etc, and i like to keep traditions
but it seems it will happen
reasons:
polls amongst the uk youth favour abolition
lots of anti royal feeling within the labour party (and lib dems)...
blair doesnt worry about tradition, for instance he abolished the lord chancellor even though by tradition the post is for the queen to decide upon..and the chancellor is theoretically senior to the PM.
The parliament act Traditionally used for national emergencies has been used constantly against all tradition.
We will be fully paid up members of an EU superstate soon, making her role ..hard to define.
Although the queen hasnt put a foot wrong, her children have.
Already the queen has no power, and does what the PM tells her..would it make much difference if we went the whole hog and abolished it all?

I'd have to agree with Rugee on this one, I think they should and will be around for many years to come.Rugee wrote:If i have anything to do with it they'll be there forever, as in my opinion the monarchy is what sets us apart from many other countrys. Personally I don't think it will come to abolishion. The youth today will learn to love them as I do and the EU and our current government will change. If the government or the EU ever even try to I have few doubts a civil war would erupt if it can't be done diplomaticaly.
True, but if the Windsors really do somthing terrible then I would support a change in the monarchy but never an outright abolishion. That depends upon the Royals themselves

Charles doesn't even count, i wouldn't even let him captain a ludo team let alone become a figure head of a nation.
Id like to see Prince Harry on the throne, seems a good lad with bit of a roguish edge the exact sort of person id want as a king. Somebody who isn't afraid to speak his mind
Maybe i was just born in the wrong century?!?!?!?!?!?

Please don't
I told myself I would refrain from posting on things, except as required or to help out my buddy whitey when the situation arose, for at least a month. I cannot help myself. My first traceable ancestor came to America from England in 1660something. I have always enjoyed the knowledge that I come from a people of substance and tradition. Traditions that the political movements of the 18th and 19th centuries that nearly destroyed, and continue the attack upon, Western Civilization must remove before they can finish us off. As annoying as they might be to some of you at times please keep them. We here have no Royalty to speak of, unless you count the venerable R.E. Lee, long since passed.
I really have no right in this, or actual stake. It seems to me that at some point in the future this great global civilization we have built will come unravelled, at that point it might be good to have some Nobility hanging around to help fix the mess. Just MHO.

But, as well, Bill
When you travel Europe each country has a host of traditions that give a sense of identity.
The US has Independence Day and Thanksgiving. Even Norway has Norway Day on May 17th (I think - started in 1814)
When you look at England all our old traditions have disappeared one by one. What we still do have is the pageantry and heritage we get from the Royal Family. If we lose that I can't think of another thing we've got to give us some sense of 'connectedness' and heritage.

Why did you lose all the traditions?
I am obviously from the Southeastern United States. What those of us fortunate enough to have been born there refer to as the promised land. I remember as a kid that most of the people from the South were rather pleased to be Southern. We took a great subliminal comfort in knowing that even though a much larger and better equiped invading Army had eventually occupied our land and driven us from the fields of battle, we never capitulated in matters of culture. Of course, we were taught to say, "It is better for us that the South lost" for the tourists and Yankee visitors. Deep in our hearts, we still loved Dixie. Now, that is changing. groups of people with no real culture who worship at the altar of materialism and industry seek through the priests of political correctness to destroy the fabric of what makes us Southern. Howard Dean's recent idiotic comment shows how badly they are loosing. We are fighting hard, some of us, to hold onto our culture and way of thinking, I fear it is a loosing battle.
Traditions are funny things I suppose. All it takes is a generation or two and they are gone. Sad I think.
I recommend reading "Albion's Seed" and "Cracker Culture, Celtic ways in the old South" for my American friends who don't get it. Deo Vindice

We still have alot to be proud of though sisy. Like the handing over of the keys (not sure if thats teh correct name). It's the cerimonial locking up of the tower of london and has been going for around 300 years, 7 daus a week, 52 weeks a year ending dead on 10pm and has only been late (by a few minutes though) once when the tower was bombed during world war 2. How many other countries can say that? If you got rid of teh monarchy what would be the point in keeping other traditions? We couldn't even call ourselves the United Kingdom, we'd have to be called teh Republic of Britain (couldn't say Great Britain because that would offend to many euro wannabes). When you look at England all our old traditions have disappeared one by one

Im with you guys on this in that i like to keep traditions, but they are dying i think.
The one issue im uncertain of is that of officers swearing loyalty to the queen, not the goverment.
Wether the officers themselves mean it, or just view it as words is something only they know
for instance, if the PM gave orders to military commanders..then the queen countermanded them..i wonder who would be followed.
Also, does anyone know why the younger people are more anti royal than the ..slightly older generation?

Because they're "anti establishment". It all come down to them being told what to do and hating it. When they realize they need the "establishment" they will respect it. I doubt anything is going to happen to the Royalty any time soon though. Also, does anyone know why the younger people are more anti royal than the ..slightly older generation?
