RN Helicopter pilot help ect

Post by Little help »

Hey my names Dan, i signed up hoping i could have some questions answered that i'm struggling to find out on the internet.

So i would really like to be a helicopter pilot for the royal navy i think it's the fleet air arm actually. anyway i was wandering as i'm currently doing GCSE's and will be doing 3 A levels after that if there are any sepcific qualifications i could get that would help me in my rather competative carreer. Like meteorology and Geography ??? i plan to do both of those, would having those qualifications actually be any help to me.?

Basically i would like to know anything that can help me in the long run, like learning a language, if so what language, is there anything in paticular that would be helpful to me in this kind of carreer i was thinking of doing Spansigh as a GCSE, i know i would be flying helicopters but i was thinking of going on some sailing courses, seeing as it's the navy. Basicallly build up my CV.

Also what's the best way to go about become a helicopter pilot for the RN , do i have to join the RAF and then move into the RN from there, or can i join the RN and train there ?

I currently have all the medical reqirments to be a pilot, 20/20 vision ect..

Any help would be appreciated

All three services have Helicopters, I think you will find that the Army has the most.

Why not have a look on the RN website (google it) or even join Rum Ration (www.navy-net.co.uk/) where you can ask these type of questions to serving and ex-serving royal navy people as well as naval recruiters.

How do I become a Royal Navy pilot?
You will need excellent eyesight and be a good all round candidate as there is strong competition for places. As a pilot is an officer role you need to have the correct minimum qualifications which are 5 GCSEs/SCEs and 2 A-levels or 3 Highers or equivalent. GCSEs/SCEs at Grade C/3 minimum to include English language and maths. You can then do an Open University degree while working for the Royal Navy or join with a degree. You spend up to a year at Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, Devon training to be an officer followed by 33 months of flying training for fast jet pilots and 23 months for helicopter pilots.
