is my friend a liar???
I have a friend who was in the army for 1 and a half years. He joined when he was 17 or 18. Im fed up of him telling me these stories. He claims he was sent to ireland alone where he had to meet someone and give a special password then the guy showed him his gun and took him somewhere secrect. He also claims he carried a loaded 9mm pistol at all times, even to night clubs everynight and helicopters use to drop him off everywhere like a taxi. And he used to patrol the streets of ireland with a loaded machine gun. Can anyone shed some light on this, he acts like a war hero and I know he is lying, I need to know. Thanks all

He is 34 now. What do you mean by 'service'? Sorry but I know nothing about army life, I just want to know if he's telling me porkies. Im going to start calling him uncle albert because of all his army stories. He told me he spent a lot of time in army jail smoking cannabis too. I hate liars. Thank you.

I mean his Army service number.
Little unlikely he would be swanning around NI alone and if as you say he is thirty four now that would mean he was born in 1975.He would have to be eighteen before he deployed, that makes it even more unlikely that he was ever in NI.1975+18=1993 and most British Troops were deployed elswehere by that time(that's not including his basic which would put the date at around 94'95)I think you have a walt on your hands.

Yes he was born in 1975. I didnt think he would get sent to ireland at that age and after being in the army for a few months. I will ask his service number and see what he says. The stories he comes out with are amazing, he thinks he is rambo, always going on about serving queen and country. I think I now know he is a liar. So it's unlikely he was ever in ireland then? hmmmm interesting, cant wait to see him next. Oh he said he left the army because of a bad foot, but before he left they had him behind a desk 'pushing a pen'!!!!

Ask for his service number as Wholley states as this is normally a sure fire way of catching people out. As he would have joined around '93 his number should start with 4 specific numbers, post what ever he tells you on here and those on the forum would soon be able to tell you if he is a 'Walt' or not.
He may have actually recieved an army number but oppted out of service early or got a MD, in which case ask for his regiment, battalion and his commanding officers name as well as where he was based in NI at the time.
It all sounds like BS anyway as I can't see any private fresh out of training being sent out on his own......in fact it would never happen!! Sounds like this guy PVR'd like me but has continued playing soldier in his head.....probably says he was a para as well?

'Paddysprat' a phrase used when explaining the origins of an 'Army Brats' accent.
I find it hard to believe any 17/18 year old would have the experience to ever work alone in N.I. Some in battalian did carry a 9mm on some jobs but never to night clubs. In South Armagh platforms are used extensively however very few people could call on them like a taxi, unless he was in the SAS or on special ops.have a friend who was in the army for 1 and a half years. Yep in could have carried a GPMG or Bren say in N.I, in a brick or part of a half multiple, but on he’s own, walking around the Falls Road or in he's case Fools Rd.

Sounds like a big Bill bullshit**.

Being deployed in NI post 1993 is entirely possible. I know people who spent the best part of ten years there between 1993 and 2001. There was also some action to be had during those times.
That said it sounds like your friend is regurgitating someone else's's dits spiced up with a bit of Gerald Seymour stuff.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your maths is shocking...
Lewis, there really isn't any point commenting on posts which have been dead for three years, chances are those people aren't here any more!

You can have peace.
Or you can have freedom.
Don't ever count on having both at once.
