Tough guy
Is anyone doing the Tough guy this year or next?
Also has anyone done it and is it as good as it looks?
I am thinking of signing up for the Jan 09 event as i have only just started training after recovering from damage to muscles in my shins.

I did it in Jan'07. Good day out, course is good fun. Tough (especially in winter, the water was honking and bl00dy icers!!!) but everyone is there for a laugh and a good day out.
Worst bit was the flaming hay - not because it burnt, but because there are tyre tunnels just before it which get full of smoke. I was coughing my guts out when I emerged.

Well when I did it I was training for PRMC so was doing plenty of running, and bodyweight circuits.
The initial run is allegedly 8miles cross country. To be honest I don't think its that long, and only really gets tough when you get near the end and you snake up and down a pretty steep hill (so maybe some hill training would be a good idea).
The assualt course section is crazy. Heaving yourself up and down pretty massive cargo nets etc. When I did it we were held up to a snails pace here because of the sheer amount of runners creating a backlog, but Ive heard theyve widened a lot of them to get round this problem so you will probably get round this bit quicker which will require a bit more upper body endurance.
Biggest obstacle is the mud. If its wet, you spend most of the time running through sloppy mud which brings cramp on pretty quickly, plus youll be soaking wet having waded through brooks and lakes. Just a good all round level of fitness will see you round.
If you are anything near as fit as you were when doing PRMC or entering CTC you will have no problems getting round it. But if you wanna make a good go at finishing near the front, just beast yourself with some good crosscountry running, hill training, and good upper body stamina and strength. The only thing that might stop you getting near the front (as happened to me) is that if its your first time at the event you will probably start near the back of the crowd, and it takes ages to get from there to the actual starting position so the front lot will have a good 20 minutes on you before you even start.
Its a good laugh though, and well worth doing. I spoke to loads of serving and retired military there and there was a good all round team spirit.
