RAF Gunner

Post by parareg »

Hey there, i just had some questions i wonder if anyone knows the answers to. I am really wanting to join the armed forces and my decision is between either the paras or the raf gunners. I have always been very interested in the paras as i greatly respect them however i have been very draw to the raf lately after reading through and realising they look after there troops alot beter then the regular army. however all i seem ot hear is people slagging the raf gunners off and saying they never come into contacts, i have read alot of threads on the forum but cant really find a reliable source of wether or not the gunners ever come into contact with the enemy and also whats a noraml day like in the regiment? once into the regiment is fitness still drilled into you non stop like it is the paras because i saw a video of the gunners in camp n there was a fat man walking around. it wasnt really a very good advertisement and really put me off. sory if this sounds silly but was just wondering, thanks.

I'm new to this site/forum which considering I have had a life long obsession with the military is a surprise.

You ask if joining the RAF Regiment is the same as the Parachute Regiment British Army? The answer quite simply is no.

When I had left college I had considered various careers in the armed forces including the RAF Regiment (particular 2 squadron i.e. paras for the RAF Regiment) in the end I had settled on the Royal Engineers simply for the choices available after phase 1 and 2 training.

Anyway the Parachute Regiment, in my opinion anyway, are far superior to the RAF Regiment if you want military parachuting and engage in front line action. The RAF Regiment do serve a very worthwhile purpose protecting airfields/airstrips and they do engage in some front line action, with a deployment lined up for iraq very soon I believe, the RAF Regiment operate Rapier surface to air anti aircraft and some other cool stuff from SA80's, LSW's, 81mm mortars, browning handguns etc... but I feel and from the serving lads I have met the Para's (Army) have more fun in terms of front line action.

With regards to maintaining fitness that, pretty much, after basic training is an individuals main responsibility although you will find group PT sessions organised as well as sport on Wednesdays and Fridays also all serving armed forces personnel have annual fitness tests.

To cut a long rambled reply short, I would go for the Parachute Regiment out of the two, but if I were you I would have a quick look at the Royal Marines, part of the UK rapid reaction force, they have the longest and arguably toughest training of all NATO forces/troops, you still have the chance to do military parachuting and the chance to go on and serve with the SBS if you're good enough (few and far between make it). (The SBS being the 'amphibious' equivalent of the SAS). The marines are pretty much self sufficient and all the bootnecks I have met have seemed pretty decent lads.

Best of luck with your decision.
