Question on application

Post by Rhyno13 »

Hi, just wondering if anyone could give me some advice please.
I am currently applying for a commission in the Army, and I am also interested in the Marines (I think I would prefer the marines more). Now my question is..on the Marines application form would you declare you are also applying fo the Army? Or would this come across as not being committed to the Marines etc?

I did exactly the same thing mate and didn't declare to either as I was going through the motions at the same time. Binned off the Army when it came to the AOSB Main Board because I knew by then (after a few fam visits) that Sandhurst wasn't for me.
Its up to you, and I can't see how it would matter too much, but thats just from my experience.

Thanks for the advice LostandFound. Can I ask what you are doing now? I passed my briefing in January and have a couple of fam visits planned. I am also in the stage of booking on to a POC course so I guess ill just continue with both applications and see what happens.

I wouldn't recommend this as you need to really concentrate on one or the other to pass, just think long and hard about your career and your future.

I do agree with this, though I think in the early stages of application its ok to do both especially with RMAS application you get to go on fam visits which will almost instantly tell you whether you a) want to join the army, and b) want to be an officer.

For me, I was way down the line with my RMAS application before I pursued the marines application. I made the decision that I would stick with my childhood ambition and attempt to join the Royal Marines. I just informed the AOSB that I wouldn't be attending the Main Board and then concentrated all my efforts on RM selection. Now I've got PRMC on April 24th.

I would say go on some fam visits as soon as you can as this will help you. I loved the visits as you get to do some mad sh*t on them, but I just new army officer wasn't going to quite cut it for me and I stuck with my gut instincts.

I don't think there's anything wrong with not being sure which one you want to pursue, but I think you soon will know.

Thanks for the advice. I think the two are related in that you need to keep your fitness up (although a much greater level of fitness is required for POC as opposed to AOSB) and current affairs etc. I have already been on a fam visit and got my sponsorship for AOSB but don't want to put all my eggs in one basket so to speak.
LostandFound if you were considernig Sandhurst then why not go for Marines officer?

not wanting to stick my nose in, but is sandhurst really just a southerner's old boy club? not wanting to offend, but a collegue has left sandhurst to go into the corps as a marine, said that if your northern and working class it's difficult to fit in down there?

I think all that is just stereotyping. In fact now adays more people that go to Sandhurst are from non public schools. Yeah you will always get toffs there who go because daddy was in the army, but the majority are not like that anymore.

Unicorn - Suck it and see. Declare your interest at a Careers Office and go on one of the fam visits to Sandhurst. No commitment required.

Rhyno13 - Think before you write please. My Dad is a Major in the Army and I'm applying to be an officer in the Royal Marines, but I'm no more well of (financially or socially) than anyone else on this forum. You've managed to pass comment on stereotyping yet do it yourself at the same time.

Regarding you question, I passed my AIB with another RM candidate and he had also passed his Army Officer selection. He didn't wan't to put all of his eggs in one basket and he managed both applications well.

For me it's Royal or nothing, so as always it's down to personal preferance, but it is possible to do both, even at the same time.
POC: Passed 21 June '06
AIB: Passed 28 June '06
AIB round 2: Failed!
PRMC: 26 June '07: Passed
RT: 24th Sept '07
Week 27 - Final Ex after Easter leave - blargh
Mrs Bevell of the AIB is still officially the nicest lady in the world.
