Thinking about death.
Well was just thinking on this topic abit as obviously if your joining the armed forces you run the risk of paying the ultimate sacrifice. Im interested to know what other peoples thoughts on this subject are. I personally find it hard to express my feelings on the subject as i think if you think on it to much it wont do you any good and well you would not be an effective soldier if you constantly worried about dying! Your thoughts please. Oh sorry if iv posted this in the wrong section feel free to move it.

Im glad someone brought this up as when people have found out what i want to do with my life they have often asked "do you wanna get killed??" or something along those lines.
Well i cant honestly say what everyone would think about it, i imagine some people on here may give quite lengthy and detailed responses full of some crap that they really know little about such as honour and all that. Truth is, no one will know what death feels like until they have to face it, we all will eventually, thats the only certain thing in life. I have faith that i will go to a better place when i die, i was raised as a catholic, although im not a practising catholic now i still believe in God and i do have faith that when i die i will go to a better place.
It is a scary thought i will admit because you're going into what no one on Earth knows about, so of course it's scary, but life teaches you how to deal with things, i am only young so i know sod all about life really when compared to someone older, but as i have said we will really know how it feels when the time comes, its what happens to us or what we do at the time that will effect the way we feel, thats what i think anyway.
Anyone else?

I think everyone must think about death now and then. Personally, I couldn't really say what I think about it except if I do get in the corps and I do get slotted, I hope its over quickly.
I went to school with the lad who was killed in the IRA bomb in Warrington in the early 90's, and the same year one of my mates was knocked over and killed by a car. Ever since then its just made me think that when your time is up, its up. Theres little point dwelling about it, though sometimes its hard not to. You could die painfully from some bullet wound, or you could die just as painfully over years from cancer. Some people die young, uneventful lives. On the opposite end, there is still the odd WW1 veteran still alive at over 100 years old. Who knows whats in store for us. When people say to me things like "What if you end up in Iraq" or something along those lines, I usually just say "Well what if a lorry ploughs into me on the way to work this morning?".

Yes good subject and if OK I have moved into the general discussion area, as this effects us all.
I am not saying I would rush out into a war zone, but I think we need to consider that 5 people are killed out roads everyday, so I guess there is as much chance as ending up on the slab that way
I never wanted to die for my country, what does that mean? More likey I would put in on the line for family and friends.

Its going to be bad for your family/friends but im a single bloke in the paras and iv not got a wife or kids yet, so for me to be killed doing my job is just something iv accepted.
I would much rather to be slotted in a combat zone than to die when im old and crusty at the age of 85, just as long as i take some of the b*stards down with me!
Had some close calls out in Afghanistan, and it did make me think, "sh*t, i was close to dying there!" and i think it makes you a better soldier. But its all about cracking on with what your doing and think about it later.

Utrinque Paratus - READY FOR ANYTHING!
I look at death the same way i look at sleep. On a normal night sleep, i close my eyes and the next thing i know im waking up. The hours in between mentally don't really exist - if you know what i mean. So when i die, my mind switches off, the same as it does when i climb into my pit. After you're minds off, thats it... night night.
Thats not to say i'd react calmy knowing i was about to die. Truth is, i don't know how i'd react. I suppose the closest i've personally been yet both involve cars. Once as the driver when an old woman pulled out in front of me when it was wet. How i managed to regain control of the car ill honestly never know. The other time was when i ended up on the bonnet of a type-r - rolled off and actually managed to land on my feet! Thank god they have good breaks thats all im saying. Both times i panicked, but both times i still managed to react well.
Its one thing we'll never know... its also another thing we won't be able to tell the grand kids!

I believe if you die your meant to one way or another. So therefore it does not get to me, nor put me off anything thay involves life risking activities.

I think I am with xcj here. I am not to worried about dieing, I think it like life will just go. Dreams are made of random pulses spread around the brain when sleeping to make sure the body is still alive. A part of the brain trys to make sence of these random pulses and that is why dreams are random. But with no brain working, no pulse, there will be nothing. BLANK. You won't even know there is nothing unless you beleive you go to heaven or something. Of course my mum will appasalotly be devastated, so I will try and keep out of deaths path. I am not to sure about the times up theory, I think it is your fault if you die, If I move to the left will a bullet whizz past just were I was lying or will it hit me because I moved in which case if I had stayed in the same spot I would still be alive right now and so on. I mean what is there left to think with once your brain is dead? I really wouldn't mind dieing if my mum was not here, I probably wouldn't care If i wasn't in the marines, but she is and I don't want to upset her. I also hope she will not get to upset if I die before her. My whole post may be aload of crap but I just think once you die, BLANK, its how people would feel once you have died, not that you would care of course because you are dead but they are still alive. But I wouldn't die for my country, I am not actully that fond of it and I sure as hell wouldn't die for the queen but I will die for my better friends and if I die on the battle field, so be it

Thing is i dont ever talk about my future plans to people unless they ask, then i'll tell them, otherwise i just keep it to myself. Its hard to say but, they don't understand. I have chosen a career with the forces because ever since i was just a kid i have always wanted something like this, i have felt that it is my place in the world to contribute towards making a difference and i stand by that because i believe it, i have also used "well you could walk out in the road and get hit by a passing vehicle and die? theres more chances of that happening!"foxtrotgolf wrote:Good quote.'Lifes greatest risk is life itself, and not to risk is to not live life at all, dieing for freedom is great than living in the shadow of weak submission.' Death is a bit of a taboo in our society, I think that's why a lot of people get a bit funny about the forces, things like 'So you want to kill people' or 'Do you want to get killed' are a bit of a reflection of that in some ways. What do you guys reckon?
I had promised myself I would keep my intentions close to my chest, then stupidly told one of my family. They went into a massive tree hugging, p*ss your pants type fit in the middle of a restaurant, giving itIm glad someone brought this up as when people have found out what i want to do with my life they have often asked "do you wanna get killed??" or something along those lines.
'You're joining a company that teaches you to kill people!'etc etc.
Boring isn't it?How do you normally respond to that type of sh**?
That sounds full on, Paratrooper01.

Not only that but i have also said to people that what we are up against today is quite frightening, and unless we meet it, then it will defeat us. This is something i really believe in too.
'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing'
That might sound like some crap to some people but i know im meant to do something about it - e.g. me believing ever since i was young that i was mean to contribute to the world and help people. Thats something i have always stayed true to. Gotta admit, it is in a way kinda funny because it sounds a bit comic book like or something from a film, but it's what i believe, and i will do whatever it takes to make sure i CAN make that difference. When it concerns death, like i have said i was raised as a catholic and went to catholic schools, i do believe in God and when i die i have faith i will go somewhere better, self-sacrifice has always been a thing of mine, i just tend to put others before myself. It's nice to have some strength at times when you really need it also.
Think about it as well, how many people who say they are non-belivers have said in a moment of crisis "oh god" or asked for some form of help from God ey?? Alot of people have.
But, bottom line is, you cannot control your fate, when your time is up, your times up no matter how you go, that is how you were meant to die. Everything happens for a reason and im a firm believer in that also.
Just some of my beliefs and values. Anyone else?
