When To Start Training?

Post by Spur »

Hi, i'm new to the forum and as i've guessed you like people using the search function, I couldn't find what I was looking for so here goes, I've wanted to join the Marines for a while now so with me leaving school in a few months I decided to go have a talk yesterday. The guy was sorted to put it frankly and showed me videos, talked through pay etc and give me information. So at the end he asked me if i'd like to follow up my interest so I said yes and he gave me an application form to take away and booked me in for an aptitude test on the 6th march. He also advised me to start training but what I want to ask is that will it be likely that if im successful with the interview and medical etc that my PRMC date will be after my exams (late june) so should I just do light training now or get stuck into a full program? Thanks in advance

Spur :)

Aright mate, welcome to the forums.

Are you currently playing any sports or doing some sort of physical exercise?

Hi mate, welcome to the forums. If I was in your position, I would train maybe 2 or 3 times a week to start with (depending on your current level of fitness), then build up from there. Do not overdo it as you will either a.) Injure yourself or b.) burn yourself out.

I hate to sound like an old man here, but also don't train so hard that it effects your education. That is most important right now for you mate :) PRMC can be put off a month or so if needs be.

A lot of people will have different opinions here mate, so listen to them all, not just mine and do what you feel is right for you :)

All the best and let us know how you are getting on.

Hi Spur,

Welcome to the forum, what sort of fitness level are you at now, ie - 3 mile time, press ups, pull ups, sit ups.

Where abouts in West Yorkshire are you from ?

Thanks for the advice guys, i'm currently football training 3 times a week and playing a match once on a sunday. As for my current scores I can manage to reach around 25 push ups (I wasn't bad at standard ones but after reading the forums on the correct way to do them im finding them more difficult :o ), 8 pull-ups (one of my strong points) and a maximum of 60 sit-ups, I believe even though I havn't started training yet my scores are quite reasonable because of the ciruit training I used to do once a week. I haven't tried running a distance yet but i'm hoping this will be quite good becuase of the football, I am hoping though :)

Just one more question I've found out the minimum weight for entry is 60kg, I currently weigh 62kg but if I begin training will this weight decrease or increase with the more muscle I gain?

Thanks once again

Hi Spur,

Providing your not over weight, if you train correctly you will gain muscle, so in theory you will gain weight, I gained 1.5 stone in about 8 months of training, mainly from circuits.
If I was you I would probably add a run to your weeks training and see how I felt, and also put in a few circuits a couple of times a week, if you feel it's too much ease off.
Between 13 and 16 i used to train fairly hard boxing 5-6 times per week and have never had any problems, just use your brain and listen to your body, don't do too much too soon and you should be fine.
So the moral of the story is to simply build up gradually, with the training your doing at the moment it's entirely possible you won't be too far away from PRMC standards.

Thanks again for the advice, I was actually considering taking up circuit training again as it does seem to improve stamina dramatically I also planned a few light gym sessions along with swimming, then of course I would do the press ups, sit ups etc. I will limit myself though so I don't over do it like you have suggested. Getting excited now :D
