I have just started running 3 miles a day on top of my gym sessions in a bid to gain fitness and lose some fat, in order to apply to the RAF reg. I know I have a long way to go yet as my quickest time to cover the distance is 27 minutes!! How bad is that!!!!!

Anyway, what kind of time should i be looking to complete 3 miles in? I want to get onto 2 squadron, so I assume i will have to be fitter than others?

Are you applying as an officer, or for trades?

For Initial Officer Training they recommend you sould be able to run 3 miles in at least 21 minutes. There is also a 'streaming' run which decides which PT group you'll be in. Everyone does the run, and the group is split 3 ways to form A, B and C stream (A being the 'fittest') To get onto A stream it's my understanding that you have to do it in around 8 or 9 minutes. There's no set time for each stream as the group is simply split into 3 equal streams.

If you're going for Regiment you'll probably be expected to do the 3 miles in a quicker time. There's also a bleep test to do, but I don't know the Regiment minimum standards for that - and it probably also depends on whether you're applying for trades, or officer.

(Please correct me anyone if any of this is inacurrate)

Thanks Gemma, im going to apply for gunner, I applied for officer last year and was told they think im too shy to be an officer. The regiment website says 24 mins for the 3 miles for gunner, but we all know the RAF tell you the location of the goalposts, when in reality they are somewhere totally different!

Very true. As everyone knows, the fitter you are before basic training, the easier you'll find it, the minium standards aren't always the minimum they expect during training. Set your self the initial goal of 24 mintues and when you get there set a new goal, and keep going.

On PGAC you will run 3 miles. They usually have a PTI running to set an exact pace to achieve the run in 24 minutes. However, you must bear in mind that the run isn't the only physically draining exercise you will do on the selection course. Therefore, you need to be confident that you can achieve the 24min standard easily...even if you are already fatigued!

I believe you are incorrect. Nobody in the RAF would be expected to run 3 miles in 9 minutes. LMAO :lol:

I belive the 'also' indicates this is an entirely different run! But yes, I am a bit of a muppet for not including the length of it :oops: !

It's 1.5 miles (or twice round some football pitches - as I understand it).

Agreed, especially when the Royal Marines have to run 3 miles in 22.5 minutes minimum.

I think when I done the 3 miler it was 24 minutes max. You do it on PGAC and also initially in the first week or so on the trainee gunner course.The 3miler on PGAC is a straight forward run paced by the PTI and run as a squad. The 3 miler on the trainee gunner course is best individual effort. Your time is taken and you are then placed into groups depending on what time range you fell between. As a result of this placing, on the next 'long' distance run that you go on you will either be at the front (if you got a good time) or in the middle (average) or at the back if you performed poorly. During a run, if you show the PTI's leading your group that you are perfoming well, you may get pushed on to the next group up.Tthen on the next run you start off with that group.

if im understanding that right, your saying its only 1.5 miles to be done in 9 minutes? thats stay very, very quick!! (dont think im having a go, just lots of people on the forums tell alot of incorrect info. to guys wanting to know) if the timings are true then fine and much good luck to anybody attempting. w.w.w
PS 'idiot' - thats what i get for straying out of known territory into something i rarely venture i.e. RAF forum. ill stick to the others :lol:

Yeah it sounds quick, but that's roughly the time it takes to get into 'A' stream. Don't forget that there's also a B and C stream so those people who take 13 - 15 minutes will probably be in C. And the idiot remark was to do with the fact that you didn't read my posts properly before asking if I'd made a mistake. :wink:

i wouldnt run 3 miles every day mate to be honest. Try mixing your cardio vascular exercise up a bit, do some swimming or cycling to get better

if you run 3 miles everyday, you'll burnout quite quick IF you arent used to training as hard, i.e. if its taking you 27 mins or so perhaps your cardio isnt as good

plenty of time to sort it. quickest way that i've heard is to do fartlek training. if you live near a football pitch try this

jog from the corner flag, along the goal line to the other flag

then sprint from the corner flag, all the way down the touchline to the other corner flag

then jog from corner flag along the goal line.

then sprint to along the touchline again

repeat this until you just cant do anymore. do this 3 times a week then try your 3 mile time and see if it improves
