SBS Officer Selection.

Post by Dickie »

Hi, I'm considering a commision in the Navy after my A Levels or University (depending on if I decide to go or not...tutition fees etc ). At the moment I am considering between a Warfare Officer or RM Officer. One big question I have is, could a RN Officer do SBS selection? I've seen a few things and read a fair bit about them over the last year or so, and think it would be an interesting thing to do (plus I love diving!). I'd like to try it even if I fail, just to see if I could do it, but I'm not sure I'd like to spend 12 years as a RM officer (if I even pass there, which is a big 'if' I think), as I really want to work in environmental science i.e a H&M Officer as they are involved with the surveying and Antarctic Survey which is something I find fascinating. This probably sounds ridiculus but I assure you there is some method behind the madness!

Ta,

Go to the Royal Marine Commandos first thatll test your limits far beyond that of the Navy and will give you some insight on how hard it is just being infantry let alone special forces.

By the way you are speaking I'd go Royal Navy.

Once in with two rings on your Cuffs you can apply to do a ships divers course and could end up as a Diving Officer. Basically teaching guys how to dive using the various different pieces of apparatus that the RN employs.

As a Bootneck Officer once you have cracked the Young Officers one year course you will have to do your time as a Troop Officer for the first two to three years until you have some time under your belt. And then if you fail the SB course you may find yourself doing a job that you detest.

OK, thanks for that! The main thing I wasn't sure of was whether a RN Officer could do selection, and I'm assuming from those replies that you could? Thanks again!

Dickie, i read your post and thought we had alot in common, then i saw where you were from!!. im currently in first year of A-levels hoping to do either RM offcier but a warfare officer hadnt escaped my mind and also thought of potential SBS. just not into sciences though, got A in phy, B in bio and B in chem ( i was aiming for C's in em all???) i found them really tough and instantly dropped them after GCSE's. Might find myself being transported on a troop ship commanded by you in the distant future  W>W>W

Dickie,
If you don't want to consider 12 years in the Royal Marines,
Why bother.?
The Corps does not want people like you - who are not committed. Try the Navy. Then you can go on - and indulge your passion!

Erm...by 'not sure' I meant I'm not sure if my interests would change over time. I'd like to do it - now - but, I know that theres a lot of other things I'd like to do in the future (one of which is get involved with the Antarctic Survey, which I think the experience from H&M would be good for). I want to try something like the RM because it is very difficult, and like I said just to see if I could actually do it, it also sounds very interesting, but perhaps not entirely relavent to some of the things I'd also like to do. I think what I'm trying to say is, it's something I would really like to do, and would be committed, but not perhaps for such a long time! That said, right now I'm still trying to decide quite which route to take. But thanks for the replies!

Why would that happen? Just because you failed SBS selection it's not the end of you.

Well, I was just asking mate - I don't know, hence I looked on the net and couldn't find anything, so I asked. I understand what you're saying, and it makes sense really. The trouble is that they just happen to be two of my lifes ambitions, and I'm trying to find a way to work them together, stupid as it may sound! Anyway, thanks for your help.

sadly the powers that be have decided in their wisdom to do away with ships divers... they will expand the northern diving group and their southern equivalent but ships divers will be phased out from now on... i forget the details (i believe its covered in this months navy news)

Wherever that grave might be, Tim Binding's Man Overboard, Picador books a nice twist in the story.

Not good tidings will cost the mob a fortune in contracting out divers on foreign visits. Either that or more jollys for the diving groups.
It's a submarine not a f*cking tambourine !
