Useful Tips For Orals.

Post by flighty »

Sorry to disappoint with the title, chaps. The daughter starts her GCSE mission tomorrow with German Oral. I have advised her to respond to all questions with 'Achtung ... Unterseebooten!' I think she will pick up quite a few marks with that.

I did German A Level hundreds of years ago. Anyone got any up to date tips for her?

And to anyone else who has kids who are about to embark on important exams .... good luck to them!

It's all a bit late now. She chucked her kit down the stairs tonight saying she couldn't do any of it. A bit stressed, methinks.

She will have to get on with the oral now as it is tomorrow afternoon, but she still has the formal written exam to sit in June.

Would be grateful for any help, Doc, as she needs a good grade in order to embark on A Level Spanish.

I speak good French, OK German and reasonable Greek and Turkish, but you know what it's like taking advice from a family member .... it don't work!

You might well be able to help her hike up her marks a point or two,

Flighty, when I did German, I cheated :o and got a great mark :D 8) . I managed to sit myself at an angle where I could just about see the text book she was asking her questions from.

Also with my course work I used one of those free translation websites. Got an A. managed to bugger up the actual GCSE though, cant think why

During my GCSE French Oral i just kept it simple, You dont have to answer all the questions so she would only answer the ones she knows and do her best. I worried about mine (this would have been about 5 years ago now) but it only lasts a short time and its better than sitting in a 3 hour science exam!!!

It turned out to be not as bad as she expected. The panic last night was quelled by a dose of Footballers' Wives and a large donner with everything on. Nothing gets to her normally so it was a bit of a shock to witness the tears and tantrums.
All I remember about my German oral was calling in the pub in Woore on the way to Stoke to do it. Don't know what I said but it sure sounded pretty fluent to me.

French oral on Wednesday morning for me. The required results to get into the 6th form are pretty high and it would be a good start to get an A in French. I'm stressing over the oral atm, trying to write out answers to all the oral questions, which has taken up much more time than I thought possible!

I got a B for my German, I barely remember the oral exam, but I talked and talked and "Ich verstehe nicht" and "bitte?" etc, worked out ok.
