Upper body strength

Post by rockapemk1 »

One thing to come out of my PROAC was poor upper body strength, ie I couldnt pull myself over the 9ft wall at Honington on my own.

Anyone suggest any exercises that will increase upper body strength?

I've had a similar weakness. I took a weekend membership at a local gym and got one of the instructors to design a workout to complement the RM fitness schedule.

I now do 1 session a week, solely on my upper body and I've noticed the difference in the number of pressups pretty much straight away....well not straight away as I can't even lift my arms afterwards!

I'm at work at the moment, but if you PM me, when I get home I'll give you the details (too many to remember right now).

why bother going to the gym to train, most gym trainers just have some weekend diploma and think they can tell you the rights and wrongs of strength training. The best upper body exercises are pull ups and dips. Most people cant do more than 2 or 3 so dont worry. To get good at them you have to practice. Get a pull up bar/dip stand combo, these are worth their weight in gold, if you cant afford one, just do your dips on 2 chairs and your pull ups on a bar in the door way. Practice every day 3 or 4 sets of 1-5 reps with 2-5 minutes rest between each. Remember your not trying for big muscles or whatever, your training pure stregth, tense up for every rep, one controlled rep is better than 4 sloppy half reps. If you can only do 1 thats fine, do 1, rest 2 or 3 minutes and try and do another. Remember, every day, dont go to failure either, you should feel stronger after every rep. If you cant pull up all the way/dip all the way, just hold the position you can get to for 30 seconds or so, this will strengthen the muscles isometrically and will help you become proficient.
