Tree Jumping/1960's?

Post by MrMitty »

Can anyone verify whether "tree jumping" was ever really practised/used by the forces in jungle operations? According to a mate of mine during the 50/60's soldiers used to jump out of planes/helicopters into trees as parachutes were not available.

Am I being wound up

The SAS practiced tree jumping by parachute into the jungles of Malaya, I have seen photo's where they have to " abseil " down from the trees. It wasn't a rope they used, but a coiled webbing strap.

ps Landind in trees by mistake is practiced, the bit I remember most is to protect your eyes and most important, you boll*cks.

Back in the 1950's we where all trained to for it, although we never did it. This was due to the emergency in Malaya. We where trained to use various kit to get you out of high trees. The one thing that sticks in my mind is that they drummed into us that you should put your left around your back then bring it between your legs with your hands grabbing your nuts. This was to stop any branches sticking up your rear end or tearing of your nuts. This training took place at Abingdon while we where doing our parachute course and they had the kit working from the jump platforms at the end of the hangers

I should add that all those that did this jump used a parachute to get into the tree's. The tree canopy could also be over two hundred feet above the floor of the jungle.
