Advice on joining the Army required

Post by BM_Fated »

I have a few questions that I would like to put to the existing service men on these boards. I would like to join the Royal Signals as a radio systems operator, I am 22 and meet the formal qualifications.

First of all concerning the army in general. Once I am in will I ever get time to see my friends in my home town or should I say my goodbyes when I leave?

As a radio systems operator will I get to travel or will I be doomed to an uneventful posting in England? Further as a RSO will I see action?

At the moment I am unfit. Although not fit I could not even run a mile! I know what needs to be done in this department.

You do get leave or the odd weekend at home, but not for the first few weeks, but you will not be seeing so much of your old friends. While you are in the Army you could wind up just about any where, or no where it is all the luck of draw. If you wish to join then start on your fitness, start of in a Gym under there supervision, so that they set you exercises and supervise you, that way you should not injure your self. What you make of the army will be up to you, but you will find it hard going at first till you get used to the Armies way.

Thanks for the input. I though as much concerning friends. I just wish that atleast one of them wanted to sign up too. That would make things easier!

That said can anyone give me an insight into life as a Radio Systems Operator? The official website only says so much about the job.

In the Army if you are given the weekend off, ie no guard duties etc.. then what you do is up to you, if you want to go home then you can.
