UK armed forces requiremenst are RIDICULUS for foreigners

Post by Guest »

Im a South African citizen, and want to join the paras, which I can since I am in a common-Wealth nation.

SOME BIG PROBLEMS THAT MAKE IT DIFFICULT:

-I can't join as an Officer even if I have college, theres a residency requirement

-Can only join as a soldier, have to pay for plane ride

-I NEED A FREAKIN SPONSOR !!!!!!!!! this is outrageous....for, get this 4-5 months !!!!!!!!!

So for 4-5 months I have to be sitting on my ass in someones house (cant be a hotel) doing a couple test and physicals which only take 2-3 days out of those 4-5 months.

-After all that shit I get in as a soldier, its like the uk is doing EVERYTHING in their power to keep foreigneers out, and I tought that they WERE SHORT ON PEOPLE....lol

-The requirements are ridiculus, has anyone done this b4? If so what was your experience ??

Calm down. Get yourself over here. Get a job in a bar, either behind the bar, or like my godson, as a bouncer. During the day do gardening work or whatever, and pass the time learning and meeting.
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

On the Q.T.
ie....a nice little cash in hand job that the tax man and other such nasties don't need to know about

Of course, you didn't read that here, cos we are all upstanding members of the community and would never dream of ripping off the Government and its agencies

Yumix bud,

Im in the same predicament as yourself. Luckily i have a sponsor in London with a hot daughter to boot!

I was told all you need to do (if ya have a sponsor) is buy the ticket, fly over and when you show up at the airport they will issue you a six month tourist visa is you ask for it, thats it (of course you give your residence details). I was told this by the overseas cell.

I wouldn't get too worked up about it bud, they have sent me some snotty little replies over issues, but i don't think its cause they're British, its cause they're being beuracrats! I still consider it an honor that they will consider letting this lowly Canuck in their forces.

Well I have 2 possible sponsors, sorta, I mean I havent talked to these people for like years and then one day im like "Hi Can I live in your House for 3-4 months or more.... while I try to get into the army" ? And trust me South African army isnt what it used to be...By the way is the waiting time shorter for regular army ? I need to wait as litle as possible so I can just get in you know? Once I am in then I can move forward with my plans, I dont tend to stay with whatever branch I fist join for more then 2 yrs so it wont be a problem.

Hey Yumix,
I can relate to some of your problems mate, being Australian, however joining the RM sounds a hell of a lot easier than the Army for some reason. No talk of sponsors or anything like that. Maybe Royal is an option for you, have think about it.

You don't have to worry about gettin a sponsor on the overseas program with the Royal Marines?

Foreigner joining Paras

yumix,
As a South African citizen, you are entitled to apply for a two year working holiday visa. It's what my other half did before she got a teaching job and stayed on with a working visa.
Sponsors, return ticket? Who needs it when you've got your own flat and job in the UK? Get the 2 year working holiday visa, show up at the AFCO and show the recruiters you're serious. Why should they go out of their way for a guy they've never met who's not even in the UK?

The worst that could happen if you don't get in is you work in the UK for awhile as a civvy and travel.

There are plenty of South African nationals in the British Forces, including the Paras, just be persistent. I know one personally whos in the Paras, another in the Royal Signals, and one more in the Royal Tank Regiment.

Do a search on 'working holidaymaker visa' or 'foreign applicant' and you will find many of my posts.

For myself i kind of have to do the sponsorship program,

Working at some pub is not gonna support a living while im waiting to get in i think. Considering the price of things in the UK df2...

Good idea i guess if you can do something more qualified.

Redhand,
Considering the price of things in the UK df2...
You're right, I speak as someone who went to the UK as a teacher and was earning reasonable money (I was with an agency) but not paid for holidays.

To people with a pitiful currency like the Canadian dollar aka the Northern peso, the UK seems expensive, but we're still ahead of the Aussies, Kiwis and Saffas money wise. Look how few Canadians there are in the UK compared to Aus, NZ, SA nationals-we have no excuse. Once you're earning the pound you forget quickly how weak other currencies actually are.

However, I spent myself into the ground anyway. I bought a used car and had a room in a house and travelled, on the piss all the time, nothing to show for it at all, except an English wife!

If you're not in skilled trades or a semi-profession like teaching, you can still up your living standard, though, hear me out. If you're willing to look in the TNT magazine and live with a few Aussies or Saffas in a house inside the M25 somewhere, you may be able to live cheaper and get around easier.

I lived with 17 people in a house in Sydney, sleeping in a child's bunkbed, sharing a room with 2 other people, so I know what its like to struggle abroad, thats why I tend to shoot my mouth off. Still not an excuse.

Remember, the forces will pay for all travel during the appplication process, so you save there.

Yumix, it is possible, but even more possible if you reside in the UK at the time of application. Fiji and Nepal don't care if the British Army comes to recruit, but in left-leaning Canada, Aus, SA and NZ there would be a political hissy fit, so we have to pay our own way. Expectations are high and we need to meet them. Getting to the UK working and living there is a piece of piss compared to army training, I promise you. Enjoy the process however long it takes, and wherever it takes you.
