Specialisations

Post by shifty_uk »

If joining the Marines, what Specialisation do you think would be best and which one would you go for? Or would you just be a regular Marine ?

I think being an Assault Engineer would be pretty kool or a Signals Specialist.

cool*

im looking for general duties first
telecoms
driver/Chef

as my choices in either 40 or 42 Commando...dont fancy scotland up there in the winter all year round :)

I really fancy Telecoms or Chef..i know there are only selected positions, around 2per unit for Telecommunications Technicians so looks like Chef...but not to sure how they are received in he Corps or in the Civvie world after?

Suppose i could always start my own business...The Royal - discount for booties!

cheers, davo

I just want to make it through PRMC first, then training.

saying that MA (medical assistant) sounds pretty interesting.

I put Illustrator and Electronic Warfare on my forms. I'd do General Duties for a couple of years and then choose a specialisation. Makes more sense to me that does. Though, as Lew said, it's best to focus on getting there first.

Make sure you remember which ones you put down as In my interview at PRMC when asked I didn't mention ML which I put down and the Cpl's reply was "So you don't know what you want to do then".

'If' I pass selection, I wanna do GD for a couple of years (as advised by my navy careers advisor), then either Medical Assistant, PTI, Landing Craft or if I do really well - Special Forces.

How many years do u have to do GD for until you can specialise ??

And how many Marines are Assault Engineers or Signalers per unit ?

Or is there a seperate unit all together ?

In the Green booklet I think it said you could try and join the signals straight away (its one of the 5 direct specialisation scheme things) not sure about the assault enginner though, one of those two jobs is what I would like to do.

Nowadays you can go to most trades straight from training. Except, Ml Pti, SF, aircrew and a few more. Beware of what they try and sell to you. Its not always true with what they say theres always a catch. On most of the gucci trades like Landing craft theres a long waiting list. if you go GD your less likely to get on your Jnr's 1 out of 20 marines get to go on the course. But if you go straight to a spec its 1 out of 3 marines. Ive just had all these lectures. If theres a job where they need some one, Guess where you might be going! Jobs what they said there short on are: Vm, driver, Chef and clerk, They always need people to fill them gaps.

wouldn't fancy being a clerk. you do so many months training to become a marine and then you sit and sort files out all day?
No thanks.

Don't know if it still happens but back in the 70's Some blokes joined as special entry recuits which meant after 14 weeks they left training and went to learn how to become Chefs or Clerks.

On completion of the relevent course they were given their Lids and Cdo Flashes. Made a fair few blokes none to happy to be honest.

Especially when you saw some Twonk on a JCC who hadnt done all the Cdo course. I hope this practice has now stopped as I thought it demeaned the Corp.
