runners knee?

Post by Cinder »

i am currently in my third week of the para training in the fighting fit book. Yesterday while doing my 8 x 200m sprints i noticed a weird soreness around the inner side of both my knees. If i tap the bone there i can feel a sharp pain. It affected my running, i simply couldn't put much pressure down to run fast!

I read in the book a little about runners knee, and it sounds like this. As the pain is coming from the bone! Does anyone know any more about this and how best to treat it, oh.. and if it will affect my joining the army in any way? Or is this something that can just happen, then heal?

thanks

Hi,

I would give a more detailed explanation but I've got to goto work in literally a minute.

However I suffered from 'runners knee' about 2 weeks, I had to go without running or high impact activity on my knee for 2 weeks, basically rest it 100% for 2 weeks (ish) and you should be fine. Run and it'll get worse.

thanks guys. I have read more about it on the net and it definately seems like this.. This completely sucks, as i wanted to finish this 8 week training and then apply for the paras.

But i've heard there is a long waiting list, so i'm sure i will have plenty time to train anyway.

Hey.

I know exactly how you feel.

I run 12-20 miles daily, with 2 hours of weights at the gym, with 2/3 days rest a week. After about 4 months of doing this, my right knee started to become a pain. I simply rubbed plenty of deep heat into it, and kept a support on it for 2 weeks, and stopped running, and leg weights. Within 2 weeks it was perfect again.

It was a major blow, and I lost quite a bit of fitness from it. I was also wanting to join the para’s, knowing I could cope with the fitness levels required. However due to the so-called waiting list, I decided to go with the regular army, and perhaps pursue in something more worth-while in the long term.

Matt, Im impressed!
You are telling us all that you run min of 48 miles a week, (just under two marathons) and a max of 100 miles ( nearly 4 marathons) a week ...
... or do you have more rest days on the weeks you do your longer runs?...
... so, a min of 60 miles a week, and a max of 80 miles a week!?

Oh, and then do 2 hours in the gym after daily, or is that just the regular 4/5 days a week - so again not daily?

The fastest men's marathon is 2 hour 5 minutes 38 seconds and is held by the USA's Khalid Khannouchi;
And, Paul Tergat took 59 min 5 sec to complete the worls fastest half marathon.

Thats about 4.5 min miles for both ( give or take a few decimal places).
Now that is faster than I can do 1 mile, sh*t, maybe even half a mile sprinting!
Now lets say you can do 8 min miles average over your distances.
- 1 hour 30 for your 12 miler (just better than my time you lucky git)
- 3 hours 10 mins (rounded) for your 20 miler.

You train 2 hours after each run in the gym with longer rest per week when you do the longer runs ...

- 17 hours 30 mins per week with 12 milers;
- 20 hours 40 mins per week with 20 milers! (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Do you not think you are setting your goals a little low?
You should be doing SB & SAS selection, and join both - you could run from one training session to the next in between the bases.
... Or is you upper body strength not up to scratch, only being able to bench your car?
Yep that must be it!

Like Saffer said, very impressive, maybe a little too impressive. Maybe you're some kind of semi-proffesional athlete, but certainly getting to the standard required for the paras doesn't need 12 miles + and two hours weights every session.

You should have no problems passing your Para course doing.

2 - 4/5 milers per week (Aerobic)
2 - Fartleks Per week (Anaerobic)
2 - Sprint sessions per week after 2 of the runs (Anaerobic)
3 - Weights of 1 hour per week (Strength)
3 - Press Ups/Sit Ups/Pull Ups circuits per week (Endurance)
1 - Swim for 30-60 mins (Aerobic)

It doesn't really matter if you can run 12-20 miles 4/5 times a week because in training you won't even reach that level by the end.

What is your sprinting and short distance running like (sub 3 miles). I can't speak for the paras but I found on my PRMC even doing two 4miles and two 6miles a week not much help compared to Fartlek and Sprinting im doing now.

At least you'll save a fortune on the food you must eat burning off that many calories.
Passed PRMC 17th December 2003

Started Basic 5th July 2004 880 Troop, Jan 2005 886 Troop, June 2005 893 Troop, July 2005 895 Troop

Hi,
Thank you, even though I sense a hint of jealousy combined with sarcasm.
I run more than often 12-14 miles, four times a week. I am not sure what was with all the basic math thrown into the post, it really has no relevance.
It is of my opinion, that anyone unable to complete 10 miles within a decent time, and not look like some sort of mutt afterwards, should not attempt to join the military.

Regarding the time spent at the gym, of where I attend to socialize some-what also, the actual lifting time accumulated is probably around 30 minutes, however two hours spent in the weight room. Of course, I use supplements such as creatine to aid such demands needed by extensive exercise, and to gain maximum results. However, my creatine cycle is nearly complete now.

I have no goals set. My goal is to enjoy what I do, which I have come to learn from my two years of working at various venues. My upper body strength is fine, as is my lower body strength.

Arent you supposed to be changing your running shoes every few hundred miles? If so then you must be spending some serious amount of cash out of them, matt!
