Glandular Fever. Oh yes

Post by Jamie T »

Well, looks like my idea of having my PRMC in June, finishing my A Level exams after, going into foundation in July and having 3 weeks paid leave in August are out. Been diagnosed with Glandular Fever!! :banghead:
Had it for 2 weeks now and it sucks to say the least. Anyone who's had it knows what I'm going through. Apparently it takes months to overcome the illness which means I may have to wait until after the August leave to even do my PRMC!! I suppose I can spend the summer with my girlfriend :kissing2: but I have to take training slowly to start.
Also, Tonsillitis is part of Glandular Fever which is what I'm going through now. It hurts to swallow anything, even water. AAAND.....I can't have alcohol while I've got it!!

I swear there's a curse on the PRMC. Lots of people I've spoken to have had colds and minor illnesses while on their PRMC, causing them to fail. I think it's due to stress as this lowers the body's immune system, disabling it from stopping illness.
I'm going through a lot of stress at the moment as I:
- Only just finished my A Level DT project the night before it was due in.
- Have my PRMC in June (well, not any more).
- Have my A Level exams in June 18th - 25th.
- Have my motorbike practical test at the end of this month.

It may not seem much but it's all at once and quite a shock to the system.
Sorry to rant a bit but I've had 2 weeks off school and a long time to think about it.

Anyone else had serious illnesses before their PRMC or foundation?

cheers

plus i find the fitter you are the easier it is to pick up flu etc, thats why people tend to get ill before prmc.
Should it not be the opposite?
Before i started doing any physical training i would pick up the cold at the drop of a hat but since doing so i rarely get ill.

Im sure i read somewhere exercise improves your immune system, meaning you get ill less, could be wrong mind :).

Try to look on the positive Jamie, see it as a test to your commitment and determination to join. If you can get past it for however long it takes for you to get better then you can atleast say that at the end of it. If you want it that badly then this will be nothing more than a setback.

My two pence

I believe if you overtrain your more susceptible to illness, as your body is concentrating on fixing the damage you're doing to it and illness creeps in the back door; same reason you shouldn't train whilst ill, cos your body can't cope with that and fighting the illness properly.

I had glandular fever a couple of years ago; tonsilitus isn't actually part of it, but glandular fever does something to you which makes you prone to other infection, tonsilitus being a common one; I bloody hated it, like you I was on pretty much just water, yoghurt and pureed food for a month. Luckily I only had it for about 6 weeks, most of that off school and work and in bed...a mate had it for 3 months though. Don't remember if I lost too much weight, but I felt crap for the whole time. So I'm afraid it's down to luck really mate, chin up, try to eat (drink) as much as possible to keep from losing too much weight, and don't jump back into training too fast...wait til you're properly better or you'll endup out of action for longer. Hope you get well soon matey and back into training/PRMC.

Well, I'm over the Glandular Fever. Have been for the past week and a bit. It definitely was GF because I had a blood test. I swear they took way too much blood for the one test. Maybe they're cloning me! Bloody hope not.
Anyway, went to the doc's today and he said I can start training again if I take it a bit easy for starters. Did a wee workout on Wednesday and haven't appeared to have lost too much strength/stamina due to the illness. Did ache a bit though, maybe because I didn't warm up. Aiming to take my PRMC late July then start basic in September, after the August leave. That's my plan anyway. Got exams to go through first.
Managed to fail my motorbike full license test on Tuesday because of one feckin junction!! I "went through a Give Way area too fast" (20mph, it was a green light though). Then I was stuck in the middle of the road because the car in front couldn't move. It was like a box junction but not marked. The whole thing failed on that one turning!! Does anyone know how to tackle these junctions? I've got my next test booked for June 28th now. Better luck then hopefully.

Cheers.
