Contact Lenses on PRMC/POC/Basic

Post by james_m »

Aright Lads,

I know HardRock did a great post on eyesight requirements and contact lenses a while back but i was just wondering if anyone has actually been down to CTC on either PRMC/POC or Basis and actually worn them?

If so, how did you get on? What type did you wear? Was/is there anytime you are not allowed to wear them?

Cheers

When i was down there for my PRMC a couple of lads were allowed to where their glasses as long as they had one of those strap things on to stop them falling off. Not to sure about contact lenses though mate !

From what I've read, glasses are fine as Benno says, contacts are allowed but not when they're unsuitable eg. anything that involves water (the tank, Woodbury Common tunnels, etc)...you'd have to have glasses for that. Afraid I've not got any personal experience of it.

Unlucky mate loads of mile wrapped on the 3 miler on my prmc it is suprising how fuc*ed you feel from the day before. Are you going to try again anytime soon? How did you find bottom field.
You may be disappointed if you fail,
but you are doomed if you don’t try.

gruff_c, I think you were in the same room as myself. B9? The one right at the bottom of the corridor.

braywick my gym test 1 scores where:

pressups : 63

bleep test : 11.4

situps : 75

pull ups : 5

I thougt we would of had a better warm up for the test but all we did was go straight into the bleep test.

Jclark yeah im going to have another go in 4 months and try and pass if i dont i might think about another career or waiting till im older still only 16.
The bottom field wasnt as bad as i thought i would be actually only lasted about 10-15 minutes, it was 3 sprints to the 5ft wall some pressups, a bit of crawling and keeping the legs off the ground 6 inches for 10 seconds then onto the assault course

Ashley im not sure which room i was in i was down by the heads and the drying room

Possible solution??

Post by FozzyNumber4 »

Hi James,

I've only just started looking at the RM and one of my biggest concerns was my vision in the water on the obstacle courses. I'm seeing my optician and the AFCO on Monday so will let you know what they say if you want, but I've also found www.sportspectacles.co.uk which has a few possibilities. Some are a bit pricy though!

I'm not sure if they would be suitable (I was looking at the Adidas Evil Eyes and the Zoom models) so any opinions on them would be great from the more experienced amongst us.....

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day who wanted to join the Police. She informed me that to be able to join you cannot wear glasses or contacts. Yet you can when joining the armed forces?!
This freind of mine had to go and get laser surgery to correct her vision.

The reason for this, the Police say, is so that you can take part in CS gas drills.
I find this a bit srange. The majority of armed forces can do their entire training, yet Police officers cannot due to a little CS gas?!

Sounds a bit crap!! The armed forces look down on laser surgery...surely in case of gas, throw off glasses and get mask on, wouldn't be worrying too much about how much you'll be able to see afterwards!! Might be a bit trickier with contacts mind...

I'm amazed the police don't allow them at all. But there you go...they also don't allow anyone with any kind of criminal record in, but the Forces do; I (very briefly) looked at joining the police but couldn't because of a driving ban.

That sounds weird, a blind man with CS gas in his eyes can see as well as a guy with perfect vision I would have thought.

In Army basic, you have to wear NHS glasses until training is over. And if you cannot shut one eye to look down your sight then you have to wear a patch. I'm not sure where this applies to the MArines however.
