I remember some time back talking to somebody for MoD procurement about the very same subject. He said the boil-in-the-bag stuff DOES have a best before date since these must be supplied on all foodstuffs. However, this bares absolutely no relation to its use by date which is about 10 years!!!

BUT several years ago MoD procurement/supplier decided it'd be nice to throw some cheese into ye olde Rat Packs which, after several months decided it no longer wanted to be confined to its little cardboard box and subsequently exploded all over the place and then turned mouldy!!! Now, if your very lucky, you'll find a load of ration packs with the "Cheese removed" tape stuck on it!

(Does anybody know wher i could find any of this tape - just for novelty value!)

The standard 24hr rations have around 2500 to 3000 calories in them. Obviously the Norwegian rations have more calories, aparently you need a bladder the size of a donkey to get through the entire wets pack it comes with though.

Where can you get ration packs from, especially in liverpool.

I looked at an armysurplus store but they cost around £20-£30 each.

How much should I be paying for them?

Last time I went on exercise with the TA my messing bill for the weekend was about £3 - and that was 2 ration packs!

£7 to £10 is normal, I get mine from a local army surplus shop though you can mail order them from www.military.co.uk for instance. But £30? Are you sure they weren't some specialist type (hand made by Swedish women with a mini bottle of champagne with each meal perhaps)?

Once had a Mars bar with the price 6D :o ( this was mid-eighties) Needless to say, it had turned white. :P
Biscuits AB have an indefinate shelf-life and taste best when left in the wrapper.

Once I cracked a ratpack open and found the choccy bar was an Astec bar. 196summut, ate it and am still here.

Used to love the old Tiffen bar. (choccy bar with biccys)

Detested the Chicken Supreme pack. Kin yuk stuff.

Kids loved it when I came home as I always saved the tubes of Rolo's for them.

Anyone remember the little pack of instant tea? And the tubes of Marge and the tubes of jam? I always dipped out and got the bloody Apricot tube!

The French 24 hr ratpacks had a small bottle of Cognac.

Yank rat packs had 5 Lucky Stripe fags in them.

Cloggie Rat packs.....................YUK!

10 man ratpacks where me favorite. Babys Heads, Pilchards, sausage in a tin. Pig out and enjoy!

The Army at Luggershall do auctions of surplus kit every so often. Put in a bid and you could end up with a chacon of 24 hr ratpacks for a song.

Mate of mine bought a Long Tom Land Rover for £100. (2.5 litre petrol engine) He uses it for his work (gamekeeper) and the fuel is paid for by the Duke of Westminster. Has had it for over 6 years.

Just click onto Google and ask.

Tiffin, Hmmmm 8)
Chicken Supreme? Don`t you start me on Chicken Farkin Supreme. Bastard.

In the fillum "The Wicker Man" there’s a shot of a gravestone. It reads, "I sleep under the ejaculate of Adders" If the bastard had ever come across Chicken Farkin Supreme, he`d know what it tastes like as well :o . Imagine chicken-flavoured cat vomit and you’re getting close. I once ate Chicken Supreme for nine days (isn’t there a paragraph in the Geneva Convention about undue cruelty?) No matter how many Spangles, bits of Nutty, Garibaldi or garlic, chilli and onion powder you add, it still tastes like Chicken Farkin Supreme.
I just projectile vomited over me keyboard, so I`m off to me pit.
Mrs aitch can stand by
