Treadmill or running on the open road?

Post by garfield »

Hey, I'm goin to the selection center on the 1st of july and i've been doing all my training for the 1 1/2 mile on a treadmill, i'm making not bad time (about 11mins 5sec) but my mate says that when u run on a treadmill you can run further and quicker than if you were running on the road? Is this true cuz with only a month to go i'd be screwed if my times not as good as i thought cuz i've been on a treadmill.

I'm goin for the 'Area systems op' in the signals by the way, anyone got the same selection dates as me?

Definetely true

in my student days (many years ago)

i was training for a half marathon

based on my times on the treadmill i was looking at a finishing time of 1hr 20.

Then about 6 weeks before the race, i hit the roads (of plymouth). And the difference was noticable immediatley, it was much tougher.

Used to run past a military base, i swear those guys used to follow me with the tracking of their guns

In the end, struggled through with a time of 1hr 30 i think, but it would have been much quicker on a treadmill

BUT dont worry, the treadmill is GREAT for cardio vascular fitness

just get a few road runs in imho and u will be fine

Roads not good (joints, shock to knees, risk of traffic, fumes etc.), if you can stick to fields - far more pleasant and easier on the legs. Perhaps once a week on a road just so you can get a precise distance.

Know how to use one of these ?

Then you'll need one of these

Bicycle Speedometer (That also clocks distances) available from most bike type shops - Halfords etc

Then get a piece of string and cut it 1.5 miles long(not 1.5 miles but the equivelant using the handy conversion near the bottom of the page) then measure said distance. The reason people tend to run 'slower' on the road is because the road will actually slow down when you do unlike a treadmill where it will keep moving no matter how tired you get. You just have to get used to actually keeping a set pace throughout the run. Besides how can you run on a treadmill its the most sould destroying piece of CV equipment in a gym ,you run your ass of for an hour and go nowhere ,either trying to watch TV while trying not to fall off or watch yourself in the mirror.

I seem to go into a trance when on the treadmill - strange

Treadmills are ok for the short runs (3 miles etc.) anything else has got to be done across fields, dirt-tracks etc.

I agree with the rest of the guys mate, stick to the roads. The inconsistency of roads and tracks such as ditchs and rises are things u really cant get off a treadmill. For the best results run on the road as much as possible.
