The CO of 40 Commando spoke to his men, he told them "The eyes of the World will be on YOU tomorrow, you will be the first troops across the border."
This simple statement must have instilled as much pride in them as it did in me. We may be justifiably proud of those who followed us, they are maintaining the traditions of our Corp, and doing so magnificently.

When posting on this and other forums, please bear in mind that wives, girlfriends and families of the men who are fighting are reading these pages. There is no need for gung ho rhetoric, the lads are doing the job, and that's all that is needed.

I feel like putting my lid on and walking down Fore Street. I am proud and honoured to have been part of the Corps, and humbled by our boys in Iraq.

My sincere best wishes to ALL who have family out there at this time!

In general I would say that our country, and its inhabitants, lack national pride.

We do have Corps pride and we should rightly be proud of our Corps and Armed Services in general and all ranks serving with them, especially those in theatre at the moment and those who will be going.

As an ex 40 lad, I always consider it my home unit. They've done a great job. I am extremely proud to have been one of them.

Group Captain Al Lockwood, at Central Command in Qatar, said marines were able to capture both oil heads in the Gulf and the pumping station.

"This is a concern for us because the regime could have polluted the gulf with oil," he said.

The al-Faw peninsula controls the straits up to the port, he said.

"The port itself is valuable to us because it's going to be our main focus for bringing humanitarian aid to Iraq," he added.

Marines spent much of Friday fanning across the rest of the al-Faw peninsula, said our correspondent.

The operation was named Houghton after a veteran World War Two commander of 40 Commando, "Titch" Houghton.

I am also an ex 40 rating, spent 7 of my 10 years in with 40 in Seaton Barracks. I still have a great pride at being an ex RM, and feel for the lads out there now.

We expect casualties, but it was a shame to get so many so quickly, especially by a bl**dy accident!

I'm sure that just at the moment our thoughts & prayers are with the families of the eight "Royals",lost overnight in such tragic circumstances ...as a general rule,I have little time for TV News reporters .. but the man outside Stonehouse Barracks today,summed it up by saying "The Royal Marines consider themselves one big family" ... & that's how it feels ... personal loss.

Although it will be of small comfort to the bereaved,at this moment they can,in time take pride in the fact that their loved ones were doing what "Royal" does best .. getting the job done.

Whilst we have no discipline in the family and school; whilst we have no respect for each other or for authority; whilst we have a weak government that will not accept responsibilty for the British people and gives in to every politically correct do good bleeding heart and grasping and greedy foreign, bogus and illegal beggar then how the hell can you expect us to have pride in our country. Especially when it is virtually a punishable offence to fly the Union Flag or the Cross of Saint George. And unlike the Americans, who are proud of their country and flag, Blair wouldn't be seen with the Union Flag just in case he upset some ethnic minority person who is quite happy to accept this country's hospitality and welfare system but not it's laws. I'm proud of my country but then I'm in the minority - or am I?
