Bent into an anchor to help keep her steady.......
The yanks get a medal for doing the advanced driving test on a bycicle.
I met a guy when over there who had no fewer than twenty six medals and he had one years service in, but he had been on a plane and flew into five conflict areas, had learnt to tie his shoes, iron his shirt, shoot two types of weapon, and crossed a busy highway at night.
They get medals for cutting a finger on barbbed wire, at least we get medals for doing the job not attending an event.

Loz I'm still working on your idea which would mean welding the two ships together tail to tail hhmmmmmmm different....

GSM '62

Post by Mutley »

Following on from a thread back in the mists of (it might have been on the old site) and a few comments dotted around on other threads: I found this interesting snippet on the '62 GSM:

The emergence of this General Service Medal in 1962 rendered the Naval and Army General Service Medals obsolete. The awarding of this medal ranges from 70 for South Vietnam to 130,000 for Northern Ireland.

Clasps: 13 so far
  • Borneo
    Radfan
    South Arabia
    Malay Peninsula
    South Vietnam
    Northern Ireland
    Dhofar
    Lebanon
    Mine Clearance
    Gulf
    Kuwait
    N.Iraq & S.Turkey
    Air Operations Iraq

US Medals

Post by 1812USMarine »

Just to correct Ratso's post, that guy you met was a phony! The US Armed Forces NEVER issued a medal for "Shoes: Learning to Tie". It is a company-level award, and a framed citation is issued ONLY after 4 consecutive months of successful tying.

Thank you,

JD

Hey Mutley what about all conflicts that went on the GSM prior to 1962.
One of the chaps in our Association sports both GSM and about four bars on each.

Tab, Mutley was making reference to the new combined forces GSM which came into service in 1962, Suez and Cyprus bars were on the old GSM. In the case of the RN/RM it was the NGS.

 The General Service Medal (GSM) 1918-1962 since 1945 nine Campaign bars have been awarded up to 1962.The Naval General Service Medal 1915-1962 as Andy stated issued to RN/RM and since 1945 eleven Campaign bars have been awarded. And I do know of a few Royal Marines who managed to collect at least four Campaign Bars to the NGS and at least four or five to the General Service Medal 1962,these of course would be the 'Lifers'.Aye JR

ahh finally i can ask a question thats been bugging me for ages!

why arent officers in the regular forces eligible for any sort of long service+good conduct medal?

all other ranks get one, all reservists get one as well including the officers, but not regular officers?

anyone know why??

if u were an army colonel with no ribbons and u spotted ur TA equivalent with the TD and 2 bars on it, wouldnt u be a bit p*ssed off?

i would!!
