Joining the TA and diabetes
Joining the TA and diabetes
I was considering joining the TA and have just been diagnosed with mild type II diabetes (diet controlled).
Will this stop me joining? Or does it mean people with type I diabetes that are insulin dependant can't join?

I would doubt they would let you join as special dietry requirements are a no no especially if deployed or in the field.
Also you may go hypo during phys or hyper miles from anywhere and then your in a world of shite and so is everyone near you
Sorry to be the teller of bad things but there we go

Are you sure about that Shadders?
Many type two’s don`t even know they have it. Surely it depends on severity? Me missus has been type one since age twelve and her "special dietary requirements" are to totally ignore any special dietary requirements and eat whatever I eat( well apart from those cosy evenings down the mess
) She’s down the gym three times a week and we`ve always been outward bounders, as well you know. She refuses to let diabetes get in the way of her doing wtf she wants. As a degree qualified midwife and one time senior sister, she has excellent control.
Kinnell Shadders are you admitting that Brufen isn`t the cure-all we`ve been led to believe, all these years

I agree Harry, type twos or the old type NIDDM's are capable of leading a normal life with many unaware they have diabetes at all.
But with pussy/perc/crab air being like they are they look at the black and white and say nah. Type 2 can lead to type 1 in some cases but still lead to the same symptons if unchecked. Look at the amount of sugar in a normal rat pack and the usual galley scran. Granted calorie intack is upped in training etc, but too many sugars and you'll go hyper. Can take a blood glucose monitor in your webbing.
There maybe a clause with STABs but I think for regs its a no-no

Thanks for the info, looks like joining is a no-no for me.
Out of interest is diabetes something that is picked up on an army medical, just read a few stories of people that got in the army with diabetes then were marched out again when it was discovered (or maybe they had developed it in the mean time).
I doubt it is worth even trying for me to join as I also had excerise induced asthma from 3 1/2 years ago although I never had an attack just struggled to get my breath after excerise for couple of months until I got an inhaler but I would have to wait until I have had no symptoms for 4 years I think.

diabetes is more often picked up under stress, and the symptons mimik other conditions. Urine tests followed by bloods, and fasting bloods tend to route the problem out into the open. There are no routine diabetes tests, especially pre-joining.
As for the asthma, thats an even bigger no no, although if you can prove you are symton free for 3 years plus you have a chance.
Sorry about this news, try the emergency services?

Sorry to steal this thread.harry hackedoff wrote:Sigs, that`s just the breaks mate. Like colour blindness is a big no no for the crabs. As Doc says though, there are other options![]()
Good luck with it
Why is colour blindness a big no no for the crabs?
Did you know colourblind people(like me) have been found by the U.S. Army to be able to see camouflage than someone with normal and colourblind people can also see in the dark better than someone with normal vision.
Fascinating I know.

Because the crabs have decided that colour blindness is not a Good Thing when working with a/c electrics or wandering about on an airfield
