New Canadian amphibious unit to be raised...

Post by anglo-saxon »

A new amphibious unit for the Canadian Forces is set to be raised on the country's west coast as part of the overall expansion of SF capability.

Initially 250 pers strong, the "Marine Commando Regiment" will be located at Comox, British Columbia and will expand in numbers of pers over time.

The role of the unit will be amphibious SF duties, including anti-terror tasks, amphib hostage rescue, etc. This coincides with the development of the Amphibious Warfare Course at the new Advanced Warfare Centre in Trenton Ontario.

The Marine Commando Unit will complement both the SAS-styled Joint Task Force 2, and the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR) currently being raised at CFB Petawawa.

Well, if they have any sense in their heads whatsoever, they will follow the RM model to a tee and bin any notion of the USMC. Having worked with both, I can't understand why plonkers here default to the US. Does my head in. Yes, it's geographically convenient, but as it is only going to be a small outfit (at least initially) it should center on quality, not big-a$$ed firepower and "yeahaah!".

No, nothing will replace our Airborne, but CSOR is going the way of 1 Para right now and will certainly fill a much needed gap.

Royal Canadian Marines?

Post by df2inaus »

60 years overdue, and the marine commando unit it couldn't be based in a more appropriate place in Canada. Maybe the beautiful setting will be an incentive for recruits.

A-S, will it recruit directly from the civilian population or will recruits come from the Army?

I hate to admit it, but I believe the worst PM in Canada's history made the correct decision to disband the Airborne Regiment, based on what I've read, it had poor leadership and ties to biker gangs.

Airborne regiment soldiers were often sent by their parent units to get rid of them, what kind of an elite unit is that?

Canada still has airborne forces, just a little more spread out than before.

Go Harper go! It's still morning in Canada.

Yes, Comox is a good choice, I believe. They have an air head right there, thier own harbour, and the second biggest naval base (easy girls) in Canada at Esquimalt just down the road.

Troops will be drawn from existing units. An online notice of intent to apply for special operations has just appeared on the DIN (DND INtranet) for CSOR (level 1: Operator, level: 2 Support) and I have no doubt the same will apply for the Marin outfit. If they have any sense at all, they will also raise a Reserve company (sqn, or whatever) for each unit and run it along the lines of R Sqn or 21/23 or the RMR. It would certainly open up their options, flexibility-wise and they'd have guys clamouring to join.

Yes, the AB were in a mess and needed sorting out, but I am never for disbandment. It is altogether too final and look at the generic crap we have now. "CSOR", what the fark is that? Even the clerks and jerks are poncing about in tan berets in Petawawa. No doubt it will be a decent outfit, but it is just a direct replacement for the AB under another name (even if it is spec ops capable). No, Collonette was a tosser and so was his boss. At least Harper has some nuts and is spending cash. Finally, we will have some strategic air lift capability (after how many years of renting Antonov's from the bl;eedin' Russians?. What a joke!). It's Conservative all the way for me, now!

Sounds pretty cool, where are they going to get the manpower for it though? I know I would like to be based in Comox. Victoria isn't too far away, easy girls at UVIC every weekend. I would maybe like to give that a shot when I finish my current job, I will just have to blag the hearing test.
The best thing about high school girls is I keep getting older but they stay the same age.
