ARMY OR RAF HELP

Post by han589 »

hello, im 24 and have wanted to join the forces ever since i can remember, i would like to to either medic or air crew/ground crew but I cant deciede what would be be better for me army or raf!? I have asked different people some say the RAF is just "civvys in uniform" but they are more of a thinking force not just yes sir no sir like it is in the army and apparently the RAF have better living conditions and food. I am also concerned being a girl I am told the Army is just not as far forward to women in the forces as the RAF and they are not treated as well, but I have always liked the idea of joining the Army, :( to me it seems like there is more action, better promotions and trade options, but Im just a civvy so what would I know! Please help!

Hello Han.

I wouldn't say living accommodation is any better in the RAF anymore. More and more Army Barracks are getting SLAM now which basically means everyone will have there own flat with toilet and shower, Sky TV, Phone and Internet connections.

But it all depends on what you want, if its Air Crew go RAF because thatsmore there thing and better opportunities to do it.
If you want to go Medic go Army, you will be closer to the front line and how things are now get loads off chances to apply your skills.
This is my view though, others may say different

Good luck

Cheers for that! But overall what woul dyou say would be the best force for long term career and happiness i suppose? There doesnt seems to be any air crew roles in the army there is avation ground crew specialist what is that like as a trade can you move up to air crew from there?

What do you think about the Army and its attitude towards women honestly good or bad?

Im sorry Han I dont know enough about the RAF or Army Air Corps to really help you that much. I don't want to give you any false answers.

But I do know is the career prospects in the Army are excellent. And aslong as your not totally useless you've got a job for at least 22years with a brilliant Pension. But thats now changing with the Army offering an extension to the 22 years for certain jobs. So promotion and job security is very good. You will do things, see things and go places not many people do, especially now days.

Cant say much about the RAF you might be best asking on there forum, but they use to review you after 6 or 9 years or so and get rid of you if you weren't up to it. But they could afford to they could afford to be picky. That might be different nowadays.

As for how Women are treated in the Army, I can honestly say you will be treated as an equal. Theres too many people with too much to loose to get involved with a discrimination case or bullying. Of course they will be cases of discrimination and bullying but thats the same in all society. But the Army as procedures to deal with such cases and will do. As a Women dont be put of in joining the Army, you will treated with respect.

Good luck han I hope I've been of help

I dont know han I dont know enough about the two. I do know abit about the Medic side of life as our Unit just like every other unit as medics attached. There job is to look after the health of our Regiment in this country or on Tour. The medic we had in Afganhistan came everywhere with us so you could get very close to the action. He was involved in saving the lifes of afew lads out there and not just our Squadron but other units as well. And also some of the local civvies. He also sadly could'nt help some as well.

So as a medic you could well get very close to the action.

Is that combat medic? Because there seems to be two different trades Medical Assistant and combat medic, I really love the idea of this but I dont want to end up empting bed pans in a military wing of a local hospital!

As you've been looking into it you probably know more than me. But I do know that in the RMC you will spend time in NHS Hospitals. As this will give you good training.
