All Para's are issued with a maroon beret from week 1, BUT are not aloud to wear it until after passing off the square, (I think that is now week 6, used to be week 4) they can only wear it with the green backing behind the capbadge until they have passed P Coy.....(used to be week 12, not sure what week it is now). Then and only then can they wear the beret with out the backing and can still be failed up until they passout and get to Battalion. P Coy is part of Para Selection not the end of it, just because you have passed it doesn't mean you are a 'Para'...
