Urgent Advice.

Post by Clueless »

Hello everyone im posting this message as i need to be 100% confident about what im doing in the navy.

Im 19 years old and im joining the royal navy soon and need to know if im doing the right thing.

My heart is 100% set on joining and its what i want to do... My concerns are this... And sorry but its very hard to say so please dont be all freaking out on me and stuff.

Im male and im joining the royal navy and i have read up on the status of the situation within the british navy but i want to know if it is an issue... Should i keep it to myself that i'am gay? will it affect me and how im treated by people. Im not a very camp or gay acting guy however i still need to know what its going to be like, and if telling people close to me my friends that i make in the navy is a wise thing to do.

Please someone give me advice or just point me in the right direction as im lost whether to tell people the truth when they ask if im single or have a girlfriend or do i tell them im gay. There is only so long i can keep saying its none of your business...

Please help.

Hi Clueless, and I doubt if you are, the navy has more brownies than M and S has coathangers, you'll be in your element but you already know that. As a fisherman you couldn't catch a cold.

Phew thanks i had myself kept awake at nights over this i did read news stories on the bbc website about there being lots of gay men serving in the navy however i wasnt sure if it was still applicable seeing as the news article was 4 - 5 years old.

Thanks for putting my mind to rest.

Gay means happy

Post by PHIL »

Yes if thats all your worried about join up! there plenty of things happening that will make you laugh like some lads masterbating in public and running through the dorms without a stitch on its great! :)
No one will bother their arse  about asking you.

You see the Royal Navy considers gay to be taboo but nearly everyone in there is gay anyway and no one cares...

You'll see plenty of things that make you think that their gay but everybodies just trying to be more outrageous and daring than the other matelot. Like mooning at the Wrens or getting a boner when the woman CPO was doing rounds or smacking someones arse raw in the shower. I done all of these things and I'm not gay... My advice son is go for it! I had a riot in the dorms.

PHIL 8) - As gay as yer like!

I'll go and tell my next door neighbor... it will probably come as a shock to him, let alone his wife. If he is gay I'm the kin Pope. I would say that possibly 2% are gay and that is the same as in society... all I can say is you were unlucky with the lads you joined up with.

Clueless.
The US Navy has a policy of"Don't ask, don't tell"
Left over from the Clinton years.
If you decided on the USN,go straight(Sorry) to the Virginia Naval Base,or Pearl Harbor where the weather is less inclement.

When i was a wren doing basic at Raleigh, there were a few females who wore comfortable shoes. Everyone knew but no-one bothered. A directive came through only recently that all substansive partners whether it be male or female will be entitled to the same pension rights etc as if they were a married hetrosexual couple. The Forces are moving in the right direction but it will take time and you can look at the fact that you will be one of the first to pass out as a gay sailor and look back in years to come when there are no prejudice and say i helped make it what it is now. But on the jovial side of things STAY AWAY FROM ROYAL THEY ARE SECRET TRANSVESTITES AND ALWAYS WEARING DRESSES. Best of luck in what you decide.

Take the advice given of going in keeping your mouth shut and do the best you can.

In my time in the Corps (quite a long time) the actual number of serving gays I knew and had to work with could be counted on one hand. the sixth and seventh were two guys I served with and would have been the last people I would have said were gay and I only found out about them after I left the Corps, but that did not change my view to them both being very professional marines. There was probably a more but never known to me.

The daft thing being that if I was to mention the names of the guys I knew here most of the old & bold would have the same list

The base line was as long as they kept themselves to themselves there was no problem. The one place gays do go wrong was forgetting the rules, crossing their boundary and doing something stupid when they came back on board after a few wets. One guy in particular I served with for 2 years on a frigate never once stepped out of line with Jack or the detachment, one night back in Stonehouse he gets pissed and ends up getting his ticket.

So common dog must rule and you let your brain rule what you do, not your di*k

Another thing what you must not do is take Jack and Royals attitude to sex and wearing strange rigs as a come on or if someone slaps your arse in the shower that he fancies you - strange people strange habits!

Its not too bad Clueless. Im straight and married but one of my friends in the Navy is Gay. This came out whilst he was onboard HMS Exeter and the lads started giving him a bit of shit but that soon stopped when the chief of section got involved and threatened to troop anyone who said a bad word about it or made jokes about Gays!
I would consider keeping your mouth shut about it but you shouldnt have too. I would say that the only people who are going to give you shit about it are the people who dont understand and are afraid of it. Chances are that not even a Guy would pull these Beasts of Human Beings.
Anyway, to cut a long story short, my mate is still in the Navy and doing well for himself on Tiffs course and now in his 4th year!

Keep your chin up and dont let any of these people put you off.
