Norwegian Recon Rat.
Hi!
Just arrived to this site after Pompy pointed me into the direction.
I'm from Norway, and I have a military background (Patrol commander, long range reconnaisance unit in the Norwegian Army).
I'm currently in civvie street, but I've applied for a 1 year stint again in the army (2IC, platoon).
The Norwegian Army is changing, perhaps finally towards turning into a professional army. I hope so, but we're only about 5 million people in Norway, so time will tell....
Although we make a poor head-count, we've been involved in a lot of UN-peacekeeping contingents (Libanon amongst many others), Kosovo (KFOR), Afghanistan (Special Forces and mine-clearing units), and now Iraq (engineering company, and probably SF as well). We're inevitably moving in that direction anyway it seems.
Hopefully we'll get an equivelant structure like the UK and US.
Been talking to a lot of Royal Marines lately, and my hat goes off to those RM's who didn't make it home from Iraq. You're an excellent fighting unit !
Talk to you all later.....

Thanx!

I was in for 4 years. I travelled some, but only within Norway. I had a chance to do a tour in Kosovo (KFOR V), but it didn't fit into the overall scheme at the time.
So many questions
No probs! Keep 'em coming!

ortlieb,
Your English is a lot better than my Norwegian. Pull up an Ice Block and sit yourself down (does wonders for the farmer giles!)

needless to say i bought very little booze in your fine country, or Denmark come to that. Met some nice people, in Dombas,Lom, Otta, Bjerkvik, Ghendersheim, Maurvangen, Lanke, Hell, and a very nice family in Halsa, one of which adopted my oppo Les and myself. thats the family we bought a Mk1 escort off for 2 bottles of whiskey (£3:50 a bottle from the NAFFI) £7:00 for the car. We also got a little sick of Fresh Smoked Salmon as well, very nice, but after 2-3 weeks of it for breakfast, dinner tea and 9 o`clockers, we couldn`t wait to get back onto compo.
