What do you do to keep/get fit?
What do you do to keep/get fit?
Before I made an application to the Army, I went on an Insight Course with 30 Signal Regiment Nuneaton, to see what life was like and to have a look at what the fitness side of the Army would be like, after experiencing my first Combat PT lesson I quickly realised who truly un-fit I was and set on changing that, my 1.5Mile run time was 14.13, I was 14 Stone which is slightly to heavy for someone of the height 6ft1.
Anyway I started with running 1/2 Miles twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon, I bought a cheep set of dung-bells for circuit training and recorded the data I collected.
After about 4 Months of running longer distances on concrete I have started to experience pain in my knees due to the high impact of the concrete and switched to a treadmill, and rather than run 3.5miles on concrete have now decided to run 1.5miles best effort 5 days a week.
Anyway cut a long story short my fitness schedule is now:
1/2 Mile Warm-up walk on Treadmill
1.5Mile Best Effort Run on Treadmill
30 Minutes 45kg resistance training sets of 10 x4 per machine (about 5 machines)
3Mile Bike level 14
1/2 Mile Swim sometimes 1 Mile Swim depending if I get cramp or not
I do this 5 days a week resting on weekends, my diet needs changing to something a little more healthier but lack the funds.
I've now got my weight down to about 13 stone but it seems higher some Months, lower other Months, but that's about average for my height and Age so no concerned over that anymore.
My 1.5Mile is now 9Mins 45seconds, lowering each time I attempt it.
Anyway that's my rather lengthy account of my fitness thus far, you don't have to go into as much detail if you want but lets see how everyone's fitness schedules differ.
I also welcome suggestions to my own.
Oh and my Date for Phase 1 Training is October 7th, what is yours? or what stage of the application process are you?

Re: What do you do to keep/get fit?
I wont lie, i hate running, ill do it if i have to.
For me keeping fit is a life style and not something you should just go and do.
I have friends who do 10 mile runs every day, but for me that just isnt entertaining.
So how do i keep in shape?
Sports, to be blunt. extreme sports at that as well. There are two BMX race tracks in my area which i like to use, i also skateboard down the local skate park, im not good, i suck at skateboarding, but it is fun as hell and its a work out, also rock climbing snowboarding and swimming.
And for the days where i just want to feel a little bit free than ill go for a walk.
Like anything you do in life, doing it by your self is Ok, but when you can do something with a group of friends it becomes easier and more fun.

Re: What do you do to keep/get fit?
I was always in shape until I passed my driving test, then I drove everywhere and replaced Sports with friends to Driving around with Friends, so now I have a reason to get and stay in shape I needed a kick start, but I am really enjoying going the Gym everyday, was made redundant from my previous employment (Funny enough 1 week after I told them I have a Start date for the Army...) so it gives me something to do through the week unless I find a little part time job between now and October.

Re: What do you do to keep/get fit?
I did read a study that showed that people who think about going to the gym, even if they don't actually go, are healthier than those who don't even think about it. Obviously they aren't as fit as those who DO go to the gym, but every little helps eh Tab?

Re: What do you do to keep/get fit?
I'm always running around here and there non stop... don't seem to be getting any fitter, just slowing down... Is that age related?
Re: What do you do to keep/get fit?
14stone to heavy? I went into the Afco and got my BMI etc done.. He told me I was 6ft1 and my ideal weight would be 14stone 5...
But I started at around 19st started going out by myself 2/3 days a week with no real distance in mind just a certain time period, however this soon got boring and I was struggling with it. I then found out about British Military Fitness and went to the free trial and since then I've become hooked on it, I hate missing a session, I go 3 times a week and I got myself down to 16st and recently added a couple extra days and currently at 15st 5 (weighed myself this morning. I can now run a mile and half non stop which im chuffed to bits with but the time was awful at 14.42, but got it down to 14.02 last thursday and hopefully it will keep heading down till I get a respectable time. I'm still about 4/5kg weight loss away from being able to make an application but I've lost just over 3stone so this last little bit wont be no bother!

Re: What do you do to keep/get fit?
Depends on the body type also though, and the weight isn't so much an issue I'm happy with being 13 to 14 stone, it's just my beer gut is going down so f@#k slowly, I mean my run times are in the 9 minutes and I can easily run for long distances without an issue, and like I said I go the Gym 5 days a week were I do a heavy session each time, but this beer belly is getting smaller, but NOT FAST ENOUGH! lolFent wrote:14stone to heavy? Re: What do you do to keep/get fit?
I know exactly how you feel. I'm losing like a 1lb a week at the minute, seems my application is a long way off yet lool but I just need to get rid of my gut too lolMillar wrote:Depends on the body type also though, and the weight isn't so much an issue I'm happy with being 13 to 14 stone, it's just my beer gut is going down so f@#k slowly, I mean my run times are in the 9 minutes and I can easily run for long distances without an issue, and like I said I go the Gym 5 days a week were I do a heavy session each time, but this beer belly is getting smaller, but NOT FAST ENOUGH! lolFent wrote:14stone to heavy? Re: What do you do to keep/get fit?
I'm considering the atkins diet, as apparently you just throw the weight off, but I will struggle with my fitness due to the lack of carbs and I'll get tired more easily, but if I only do it for a week and see how it is at first, might be something to consider.
Re: What do you do to keep/get fit?
I already eat fairly healthy and have an iPhone app which helps me count my calorie intake. But I'm willing to try anything to be honestMillar wrote:I'm considering the atkins diet, as apparently you just throw the weight off, but I will struggle with my fitness due to the lack of carbs and I'll get tired more easily, but if I only do it for a week and see how it is at first, might be something to consider.

High protein, low carb (not NO carb) and one cheat meal a week.
Make sure you're drinking enough water...

Problem is I don't have the first clue what sorta meals I would have to eat to achieve that lolHyperlithe wrote:High protein, low carb (not NO carb) and one cheat meal a week.

Re: What do you do to keep/get fit?
Millar,
There is no secret diet that works wonders. Atkins and all the others are at best counter productive and at worst dangerous. Unless you have specific dietary requirements and following medical advice.
Eat a well balanced diet and, unless you are training for a specific and/or extreme event, this will stand you in good stead.
Forget energy drinks, protein supplements, vitamin/mineral pills etc.
3 or 4 well prepared, balanced meals a day will do you the world of good. The less processed food the better. Plenty of fresh fruit and veggies.
Fresh fruit contains loads of sugar, but it's good sugar!
The hardest part of all is will power; eat well but balanced and do some exercise. Don't cheat or kid yourself. The number of people who tell me that doesn't work for them is astonishing, mainly because they are lying, mostly to themselves!
One last tip - Everything in moderation.

Re: What do you do to keep/get fit?
I often smile when I read a lot of these posts on how to get fit, I grew up during WW2 and you could not have 3 to 4 meals a day, in fact you were lucky to have one. Apart from Cod-liver oil there was no such thing as food supplements. Yet we were all physical fit and could run, march and fight all day. Still we did not not have TV or computer games which caused us to sit down for hours on end, but we out playing some form of sport instead. So if you want to be fit get out there and do some thing apart from sitting on your butt
