The British Ministry of Defence uses a Special Escort Group consisting of an 11 vehicle convoy, to ferry nuclear materials (and warheads) around the country. I am writing a novel - as a new part of this novel, I have decided to write about an attack on one of the SEG convoys.
NOTE: This is set in the future, Britain, France, Russia and the United States have all signed a treaty which severely diminishes their nuclear weapons stockpiles (they no longer have active, rapid-deployment capabilities) - the remaining weapons are stored in nuclear stockpile facilities in the respective countries. It is while en route that the convoy is attacked.
The attack happens at a choke point as the convoy travels through a heavily forested area, and is carried out by a team of twelve men all armed with M4 assault rifles, FN MAG heavy-machine-guns, and carrying Beretta M9 pistols. There are two snipers armed with .50 BMG sniper rifles which take out the drivers of the two Truck Cargo Heavy Duty carriers. There is also an RPG team to take out helicopters.
Fourteen Royal Marines (an arm of Fleet Protection Group Royal Marines) provide armed security, these men are armed with L85A2's and sidearms and an Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow Attack Helicopter. As far as I am aware, there is no other armed men to protect the SEG convoy.
The RM Detachment is armoured and the TCHD vehicles are carrying the nukes that are bolted to the bed of the containers. Also, reinforcements are <5 minutes away (however, as mentioned, a simultaneous terrorist attack has drawn the Security Services and the Armed Forces's attention away from the SEG convoy), therefore, the reinforcements are ordered to assist in the terrorist attack. All eyes are off the SEG.
NOTE: This attack team is made up of ex-Special Forces soldiers (SAS and SBS) who are acquiring the nuclear weapons and then handing them over to a third party.
NOTE: As a part of this section of the novel, there will be a simultaneous terrorist attack to distract MI5 and the fictional Covert Operations Group, while this team attacks the SEG convoy.
My questions are: is an attack possible? If so, how would you do it? Do you like the idea of a diversion being created? If you would be so kind, I'd like a few scenarios from different people as to how an attack on an MoD convoy might occur?
Many thanks, hawky.

SEG - under attack.
Re: SEG - under attack.
Couple of points,
RPG's won't bring down an AH64 unless its very very low and slow or and Takingoff/landing, even then it would be a very lucky shot. The AH would not be in that height band as its job would be top Cover so min height 1000', The AH Job would be route clearance so anything on the route would be seen and reported (AH work in pairs). Snipers would be easilly ID'd unless in stationary vehicles which would also arouse interest. (Heavy wooods would be avoided).
I would expect that in event of another security scare the convoy would be cancelled.

Re: SEG - under attack.
I have to say that the information I've recieved has been from internet sources. Due to OpSec, I can't (understandably so) access the particulars, but this attack needs to happen as part of the plot. But, I want it to conform to the rest of the novel, and not go off on a tangent.
As I've mentioned, this attack needs to happen, and I'd definitely need to space it out when I write - I need to give it a few paragraphs or a chapter. To allow the necessary "realism" of the group getting in more people to exercise such an attack.
I was also thinking of having three choppers in the sky once the attack begins, one blows out the bridge (which the convoy must cross), the second takes out the air support, the third hovers in front of the vehicles (like in Black Hawk Down when the Little Bird hovers a few inches above the ground in front of the General's car). I was going to use Russian Mi-28 Havoc's, but then a friend pointed out to me that these are Russian military aircraft, on British soil (and in British airspace).
So, I'm quizzed as to what I could use instead, I'm not familiar with British military aircraft that you could easily obtain and get into the country (short of stealing one off the base itself), then you'd be using Apache's or Lynx Wildcat's... or, I could always use ISTAR UAV drones to take out vehicles individually?
I'm just bouncing ideas around... feedback would be much appreciated.

Re: SEG - under attack.
Sounds like some one is trying to think up an action game for PS3
Re: SEG - under attack.
There's no reason why my novel couldn't be turned into an action game. But that's not my primary endgame...

mind telling us what your secondary endgame is?hawky94 wrote:There's no reason why my novel couldn't be turned into an action game. But that's not my primary endgame...

Re: SEG - under attack.
Well, if it were even to be accepted by a publisher, that would be fantastic. My secondary endgame is that it becomes successful and perhaps they make a film out of it! Or a video game.
But that's getting away from the topic of discussion...

You could involve IEDs to get the convoy to stop. It's a current method, it's practical, and effective. Although, I can't see lightly armed irregulars tackling an apache without a decent amount of "hollywood factor" coming to mind; not that I'm an expert or anything.
