Joining the Royal Marines, but is my tattoo 'excessive'?

Post by wingerwill11 »

Had my first AFCO meeting yesterday, everything went fine. Told them and showed them my tattoo on my wrist and they were pretty sure the uniform would cover this, but I also have another tattoo which I thought would be of no issue because it's always covered, but as I see in the booklet they gave me, 'excessive tattoos' are forbidden. It goes round my belly button in Tribal design and up the one side of my ribs, about an inch bellow my chest. If anyone has any info on what is an 'excessice tattoo' it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

One thing that puts them off is Lewd, rude or offensive, so they might over look it if it does not fall into one of those, but the operative word is might.

Rule of thumb used to be when saluting tat's should not be visible.
Not sure if thats still the case but with recent trending it would not suprise me if your training team were covered in tasteful and artistic body art :)

Since you won't salute 'Frog' style you should be o.k. Am reminded of the Legionnaire who had ' Merde a vous' prominently displayed when saluting which caused great mirth to his mates but not to an inspecting general. And yes this is a true anecdote.

Well i were covered in 'motorhead' tattoos (the band) cant get more offensive than that :o) joking aside if it aint on show its not an issue - as long as it aint anything the corps are stead fastly against i.e racism, incitefull remarks/images, banned groups etc etc. If its on show (below short sleeve order) and assuming its harmless I reckon its down to the discretion of the recruiter.I might be wrong but I was ok? think as long as your sound in mind etc etc they can see past anything that stands out a mile. Iv seen guys with tattoos all over so im sure the blokes in recruitment have too.
