Job Choices

Post by RC450 »

If anyone is part of infantry or knows about commando or reconnaissance roles I would appreciate some advice, tips, information, anything at all. These are the areas I would like to be involved in should I pass all the criteria. Before I settle on these roles, I'd like to know what I am getting myself into so I am prepared for the interviews and everything that follows.

I had my first meeting with my local recruitment officer and other army members, first time in army presence, well impressed.

Cheers.

RC, you mentioned Commando and Recce.

If you are Joining the RM then you will do the Commando course as part of your training.

If as you mention Army then the only ways you can do the Commando course is:-

RE as specialist Engineer training for attachment to 3 Cdo bde. They have Engineer Recce as part of their set up.

RA as above.

Finally if you go to 1 Rifles I believe that eventually some will be doing the Commando course, not sure how, when or in what numbers.

Thanks for the info. I got an idea of how it comes together. The above are mentioned as specialist jobs in some of the infantry guides I was given. In one of the guides it is stated "after a period of time" for moving into more specialist jobs.

From your experience, do you know of any infantry soldiers who've moved into more specialist areas and what kind of time frame is to be expected?

Have you decided where you would like to serve ? Which arm that is ....

If you decide for the Royal Marines most of the questions you have will be answered as you progress.

Commando Course and then whichever specialist qualification opens itself.

Opportunities are many and you would be best advised to do the training first and then take a long look at the options .....

It takes as long as it takes - no more, no less

Good luck with it

RC, for the RM side of life you will need to do at least one tour in a Commando Unit before you can go to Recce Troop, having said that its a well sought after job and you will need a reccomend from your Coy commander. Having got the chance to go to Recce the next step is the selection process, usually a week long consisting of all the Fieldcraft skills and Phys tests that the Troop requires.

Once in Recce you can usually go to other Troops in the Corps without going through the whole selection process again. It is without doubt one of the best jobs I ever did and subsequently spent nearly 10 yrs in 3 different troops.

Perks of RM Recce is the adquals that go with it, Para, and if your really lucky Sniper. You will also have a good chance of other courses and possibly the Military Ski Instructors course in Norway.

Not sure how Army Inf Recce works but I would imagine that its on a similar set up.

Thanks for all the answers, sorry if I had not been clear enough. My local regiment is the Royal Irish. I have infantry down as first preference but that is based on being able to move into infantry recce later down the line, judging by the answers its is possible so I am going to stick with it.

Should I do some research on pref 2 and 3 in the mean time, in case some questions on those come up during the interview process?

Cheers.
