Hello / Thinking about enlisting

Post by chimp »

Hello everyone, new to the forum.

Recently I've been considering enlisting, ive been absorbing all the various bits of information I can find about the army. Im looking at the infantry, something like a rifles regiment.

Im 23 years old, ive recently got my 2:1 in genetics from Manchester Uni and im spending my time working in the family business. However im still pretty young, and I want to get out there and experience the world a bit before being bogged down in the 9-5 rat race.

Im a pretty easy going person, I have no problems doing what im told and following orders, guess you could say im a bit of a push over . I have a few questions / worries about the whole joining and selection process, ive read up loads so I know whats involved, but some things are relevant to my situation.

1) Age - 23 isnt too old by definition, but im guessing its pretty odd for someone this old to begin basic training? Or am i just fussing over nothing here.

2) Degree - I know it sounds odd, but will having a B.Sc negatively affect my chances? Especially if its combat, I know some organisations can be really funny and say things like you are not correctly qualified or over qualified.

3) Family / freinds - How did everyone who has joined up break the news to family members? The only close family I have are my mum and dad, who are separated. My mum would absolutely freak out at the thought of me in a combat situation. My dad is pretty stoic, but he always sighs when you hear about casualities in afghan on the news.

4) Process of joining - I know the next step is to actually go to a recruitment office and speak to someone. But I live in a smallish town, and the army website lists a connexions office as being the nearest place. Im a bit confused, surely an army recruiter doesnt hang out at a connexions office 7 days a week. Will I have to travel to a bigger town / city to find a proper recruiting office?

Cheers to anyone taking the time to answer my Q's.

With a degree why not go for a Commission in the Royal Engineers or some thing of that ilk. You will get all the fun of military life and will be able to use your degree and widen it know doubt

Hello mate,

I have been out for a good few years but can hopefully help.

1. 23 is not old. You will probably be one of the older recruits in phase 1, but don't worry. Maturity counts for a lot.

2. You will probably be pointed in the direction of becoming an officer, due to your degree. It is up to you though. There were 2 graduates in my intake (15 years ago, yikes).

3. I remember my mum going nuts, but she dealt with it. the army made me a man. I made the best friends I will ever have in the army.

4. You could really do with going to a careers office to make the 1st contact.

The best piece of advice I will give you, is to make up your own mind about what you want to do. I was talked into joining a different cap badge than I wanted too. Spent my remaining years wishing I had chosen differently.

Good luck, and keep us updated. The army is a great career.

Thanks for the replies, means a lot to have someone to talk it over with.

Im glad 23 isnt considered too old. Thinking about it I probably woudnt be up to the challenge when younger, mentally and physically.

Im definately going to make 'first contact' soon, Ive only just stared fitness training though so I think ill nuke myself for a few weeks, just to get my baseline up. Im fine strength wise, but my stamina is terrible - damn internet to blame.

When you go to the recruiter, should you wear a suit? My gut tells me yes, but experience tells me its best to ask others.

I wouldn't worry about a suit for the first time you walk through the door. I would just make sure you are clean shaven and have a list of any questions for the recruiter.

There is plenty of info on the army website too, which tells you the fitness level expected. It is very basic to start with.

By the way, if you were worried about 23 being old, I am going through the process of joining 4 Para at 32.

Good luck mate.

32? :o Well thats made me feel better.

Good idea about shaving, I often go days without trying to have that George Clooney 10'o clock shadow thing going on (never works).

Ive checked out the fitness required for the 2 day selection thingy, im not too worried. The only thing I need to improve is my stamina, but ive got plenty of time for that. 1.5 miles kind of feels like 15 miles right now

If you are going for Para that means you have to do the 1.5 mile run in under 9:18 doesnt it?

yeah. got it down to 08.55. Least of my worries mate.

Dont get hung up on your stamina. It will come. If you can get through the selection tests, the army will take you the rest of the way. Saying that, the fitter you are to begin with, the easier you will find it - trust me.

I'm 24 and starting Phase 1 in January. I look at it this way, I may be one of the oldest when I go in but I've tried the whole 9-5 thing and it's not for me, I experienced "civi life" and I think that will benefit me when I get in.
I think your best bet would be to go to a bigger town (can't be that far) and speak to someone at an AFCO just to be safe. They'll probably get you to take the Officer route, but why not eh? No point not making use of your quals.
I wouldn't say my Mum is short sighted but when I first told her I was joining all she would think about was Afghanistn this, Afghanistan that. She's cool with it now, she knows it's what I want to do. My Dad on the otherhand, he's ex-army anyway so he was over the moon.
And don't worry too much about the selection weekend. Obviously like the guys have said, the fitter you are the easier it will be but the Army will get you Army fit in Phase 1.

Some sound advice here -

and as Tab has said - Commission. It is your best bet and in everyone elses interest. Go where you may be of most use.

Choose your capbadge as has also been said.

Good luck

Hi chimp, I'm in the same boat.

I'm 5'6" and weigh 14 stone dead, I'm carrying about a stone and a half too much to take my BARB test, which is your initial test, to see what jobs you qualify for.

I've been running for about 3 weeks now, and doing circuit training for about 2 weeks (only 4 sessions so far =o/) but i've got my 1.5 miles down from 16 minutes (bad :( ) to 12:37 (better) and i'm getting better everyday.

just thought i'd re assure you that even an overweight git like myself can get ready :)

OH! and before i run, when you get to a recruitment office, ask about the 'Look at life' courses, they are over 3 days, and put you through basic drill, night camp, and things like that.

I have one on the 25th of September, with the welsh guard, and it looks to be an amazing experience.

don't forget to mention your degree though :P

Hi Chimp

I just turned 25 am waiting to start phase 1 in March. A friend of mine is 32 and just starting. When I was at the 2 day selection (ADSC) there was such an age range and I really wouldnt worry about that

The application process seems long and there's a waiting list for a lot of jobs (don't know about for officers) but its so worth waiting out for.

Dfeinately go to a careers office they are so helpful and will give you plenty of info, dvds etc so you can make up your mind

Best of luck
BARB - 78
ADSC - Passed
Job - Combat Medic

Shape up and ship out

Work on it - the BMI chart is real life - but lots of heroes don't fit the frame
