service transfers

Post by Stewby »

Good morning gents/ladys.

It has been sometime indeed since i've made posts on this website! I am currently a serving member of the royal navy where I have been for 2 and half years. However finding myself increasingly bored with my job I have made my intrest known to my divisional officer regarding transfering to the army (hence posting here).

I have been met by a brick wall response which suprised me as there are literally navy lads sat round on the arse while daily i read about the army being stretched for man power in every capacity. I thought they would snap up a fit young single bloke who wants a chance to be a soldier and get stuck in. Ive got bags of enthusiasm and love the military however will leave the navy after my return of service as there attitude is so unrewarding and uninspiring. Anyways this post isnt a drip!

Iwould be intrested to here from anyone who can provide me with genuine information on transfering to the army before my return of service (i am aware i could leave the navy after 2 more years then re join the army but i really want to make the move asap) Im 23 and not getting younger!! :D

cheers.

yours

What sort of role where you looking at ? if it things along the line of a front line infantary role wouldn't you prefer joining the marines as obviously the navy would rather transfer someone to there other roles then lose them completely, if not a friend of mine recently who has only just completed there initial training got a transfer from navy to army so it is possible.
He who deliberates fully before taking a step will spend his entire life on one leg.

thanks for the reply mate,

I understand the marines is an option i have a history in the marines i made it half way thru basic in 2005 which is probably why ive found the navy such a culture shock, there attitude does seem to be 'minimum effort maximum loafing'.

I have of course considerd rejoining but I was keen to take up a trade in the army and learn some real skills as well as combining this with a bit of action!

I imagine your friend found it easy to transfer as he probably hadnt passed his pvr date. I would be keen to find out more about this transfer tho....anyone else??

Goto your AFCO, speak to the army off the record, see whats out there and if the trade you want is short. What trade are you now, have you completed your return of service post training? If you havent then tough tit.

It is possible but remember your DO is also targetted on manpower retention so probably will give you the fark about.

Answer those questions and we will go from there.

thank you for the reply doc,

I spoke to my local AFCO last week, the staff there told me that he had never heard of anyone transfering before return of service is up (to answer your next question i have until april next year until im served up.)

As you suggested im probably bolloxed until then, i currently work in minewarfare which to boot is teeming with little buggers siting around doing sod all. So i dont imagine I would have a problem getting manning clearance.

I have looked at a job in observation for the royal artillery, however am prepared to look at other options.

Transfer to radio operator, do your all arms and go 148 commando down at poole then. Navy RO's serve with RA guys, you get to jump out of planes too.

excuse my ignorance but are you refering to going communicator in the RN? as this would mean doing time on a ship to get my task book complete before such a transfer would be possible, please correct me if you meant something else. however jumping out of perfectly good aircraft does sound hoofin

As UKSF is now tri-service and as you say you wish to get "stuck-in", you could try for selection, :)

I apreciate the input mate however I think with no actual combat experience and very little infantry/soldiering experience. Going for selection would be a pretty silly idea. I do wanna get stuck in dont get me wrong and dont rule out SF as an option one day as it is the ultimate acomplishment but lets take it one step at a time

Hello Stewby,

Nice to see you did not rise to my little 'fishing trip'. :)

Experience is ideal, but then again it is not a prerequisite for SF.
I am aware of another member of the RN who is looking to change over and is having a long drawn out battle with the Admiralty.

As you say, one step at a time.
Remember Gidion,
