New Lad Please Help!
"And to be honest. Marines is just a name nowadays. I rarely hear of any amphibious operations happen in Iraq. And I doubt the Marines come to Iraq via boat."
But they have done in Afgahn:

Hahaha, mega - Royal launches amphibious assault in a landlocked country. 'If they don't have water then farking make water you cnut I said a beach landing and I want it now!.' Good skills
Next up: Para Reg to do first combat jump into forest.
Actually a sound tactical idea, hitting lightest area of defence where you are least expected. And yes, Iraq saw lots of amphibious action - the 2003 invasion was led by a massive USMC landing for a start.

The trainasium is good fun, you'll enjoy it. You do it in week three as practice for parents day. The part that bothered me was actually climbing the net up to the shuffle bars, then I realised it wasn't too bad and remember if you fall off the shufle bars these days its only a 10 foot drop and all of the othere obstacles have nets.parajosh wrote:Hello everybody I am new to this website. I thinks it's great and there is lots of useful information. I am 3 weeks away from leaving school and I have been considering my options and i really would like to join the Army. Not only would I like to join the Army but I'd like to join the best which I found out when I went into my army careers office is the Parachute Regiment. I sat and talked to the Para and he gave me a few booklets and told me to think about it. I told him I would probably shit myself when it came to the Trainasium (because I'm afraid of heights) and he told me not to let it stand in my way and there are lots of lads who are afraid of heights that do join up. I just want to ask if there is any paras on this website who please give me some info via pm or this thread as I really really really would love to join the paras but i am bricking itand were you scared on the Trainasium??
Also Ive been looking on bebo at some paras in training and they were with different berets could anyone tell me why please? Also When do you first have to do the Trainasium? And is phase one as same as what everyone else joining the army would do like it says in the booklet? or has it changed now? And do you get moved in with th rest of para recruits on phase two?
Sorry for all the questions but thanks for reading much appreciated
Someone actually did fall off one of the obstacles and all that happened was he bruised his knee and he was running the land of nod a few days later.
I have just finished para phase 1 and as far as I can tell it is the same for soldiering skills as the rest of the infantry except they are more strict about done up pouches and taped up chinstraps etc. Of course certain concessions have been made to make the para recruits fall in line with the others, namely we don't do the GPMG any more because it is apparently "too heavy" to march with. It probably is a lick out to carry but there is a big difference between something being a lickout and being impossible.
The fitness is more intense(but nothing a determined lad with a 9:30 run time couldn't handle), I think other regiments do 3 mile runs whereas the shortest run para recruits do(apart from the bft) is 5 or 6 miles. And yes you are with para recruits all the way through, you are not supposed to associate with recruits from other regiments and the brainwashing is so effective that you won't want to anyway.

Hey mate, it seems to me that your AFCO was trying to steer you towards his reg..
Paras are more elitist, however the Taleban don't make special bullets to kill them and they don't try to deliberatly miss you if you're on patrol and not a para..
Point is, any infantry reg you will go to Iraq or Afghanistan these days, you will get combat experience in a hostile environment.. therefore the tag of elite is more a hangover from days gone by..
No doubt any paras, serving or ex, on here will differ, as is their right, p coy is HARD, I failed to even get there and I doubt I could get to a level of fitness required now and i have the utmost respect for what they've done.
I suggest you read up on Afghanistan and Iraq before making a choice about which reg to join..
Also if you're hell bent on doing P coy and getting your wings, you could always join Signals, Engineers, Artillery, Logistics and apply for Airborne brigade through them (providing your trade is needed)..
You're just starting out, explore your options, I wish I had!!
Good luck with whatever you decide..
If you decide to go para give it 100% and get that beret,.. Believe me the Trainasium is the LEAST of your worries if you go Para!!
