3 para by Patrick Bishop

Post by mm1306 »

I cannot find a post here on this so I am going to ask this question.
How realistic a representation of the 2006 3 para Afghanistan tour was this?
I ask this to anybody who was there because I know that many journalists like to take liberties with the truth(or sometimes the publisher applies pressure to them to do so). I thought it was an interesting book because it shows the operation all the way from the top brass level down to the juniour privates but would like to know what serving soldiers think of it if they have read it. It also seems to show that Northern Ireland despite being supposedly peacekeeping did actually give British troops an edge as in this book it constanly refers to patrols of West Belfast etc.

I've only just started reading the book, but it seems quite good so far. Fallschirmjager over on ARRSE was featured quite heavily in the book and he has given it the thumbs up, if I remember correctly.

I'm about half way through the book after getting it yesterday and I have to say it's amazing.

He got his mug in it, so he would say that. :P

I bought it yesterday and after reading about half of it so far, it seems a very good read. Would definitely recommend it...

I thought it was a good read, and after being in some of the same locations after the 3 para lads on Herrick 5 and seeing how hardcore they had it in Sangin etc. when they were there, it made it even more impressive.

Hey Stretch, is your OC in FPGRM a turkey called Spencer? If so I wonder if he's as popular there as he was at Comms Tp in the early 90's when an amazing £5 was raised from about 140 ranks when he left the troop :o Hopefully he can pass his BFT these days after all those years practice
Odious man. Sorry if he's an oppo of yours (doubt it tho')

Stay safe bud.

It is indeed mate. Total nobber! and lucky me I have an audience with him next week over me being a naughty boy ashore  I remember him coming to introduce himself to our squadron. He straight off the bat assumed we had all only served at FPG and gave us a hoofin chat about how his priority was to get us to a unit and on herrick as "getting shot at is the best feeling in the world, better than any drug!". Yeah, cheers for that one sir...

I've sent you a PM Stretch. Not so much that I don't want to share my thoughts/experiences - just not on a para forum  - he was (probably still is) an embarrassment to our cherished green lid.

Cheers mucker.
