Family who has served before you.

Post by jabcrosshook »

Just interested, has anyone go family who has/still is serving before you join(ed) the armed forces? Just wondering to see if family is an influence for people.
Family who has served in my family are; my Dad was in the RAF, my Grandad (Mums Dad) was in the RAF - not sure how long, my Great Grandad (Mums Dads Dad  ) was in the army during WW2 artillery we think and he served in Africa and Norway we think but he never spoke about and died a while aback so no one knows, and finally my Great Uncle was a Royal Marine (My Mums Mums Brother).
I don't know about anymore than that.

PS, anyone know how I could find out about my Great Grandads service history if I got his name?

Both my Granddad’s served during the war (as will most peoples I’m guessing)

My dad's dad was a RAF bomb aimer in a Lancaster plane and my mum's dad was in the Army. Also my great granddad died in the trench's in ww1 (apparently it was because of a hefty kick in the chest :-? )

I'm from a coal mining background (John Cooper Clarke's Beasley Street :-? a sociologists paradise) which was a reserved occupation so not much military service - although my grandad tried to join the army in South Wales in the 1920's but was rejected because he was malnourished

I've found out that one great uncle caught one in the swede at Gallipoli, one, on the other side, fought with Michael Collins in the IRA (oddly one part of that branch of the family in Cork had a tradition of Royal Navy service) and another was a Lysander pilot for the SOE in the Balkans. Mixed bunch really. I served in the RM.

My Grandad was in the Kings during WWII. A few of my uncles did National Service and one of my other uncles joined up in the 70's not sure which Regiments any of them joined though but I'm pretty sure at least two of them served in Infantry Regiments.

My grandad was in the Royal Tank Regiment in the Korean War and my uncle was in the Navy during the Gulf War and supposedly in the special forces SBS (but he has never admited it, he just let a few things slip once  ).

My Grandad was in the Black Watch for a few years, then transferred over to the Scots Guards. My great Grandmother was in the Army, and my great Grandfather was in the navy, but was given a midnight shake and got brain damaged, so had to leave. Both the great grandparents were serving during WW2. My Uncle attempted to get into the Marines, although failed PRMC. I proved both him and my Father wrong when they told me i couldn't do it. Hopefully i'll be able to add some more military history to my family.
