A Couple Of Questions!

Post by eroo »

Hi all,
im 16 and i am really keen on keeping fit.i have been doing a lot of weights and running for the past few months.just wanted to know;1.does the whole 'low reps with heavy weight' really work for increasing muscle size?2.what exercises build up hamstrings?
by the way, could anyone from military/police circles tell me a good time to complete a 3.2k run.my best attempt was 11mins 8secs.is this good or bad!?
thanks,
eroo

yes, low reps at a high weight are for getting big muscles, high reps and an average wieght is for endurance and strength. just depends what your looking for.
go to google.com and type in Hamstring Exercises
you'll get hundreds.

I was always lead to believe that low reps, (between1-5) high weights is used to improve max strength ,the ability to shift a heavy load. For hypertrophy, an increase in size of the muscle, you are to use a medium weight with mid range reps (between 6-12) and for endurance between (13-25 reps)

Just depends on what you wish to gain from lifting weights... also as a little side note, remember to use correct form and never sacrifice form for a higher weight... wouldn't want to do you're self any harm.

Just what I’ve herd and by the way the numbers I’ve used in there for the amount of reps may be slightly inaccurate so don't go quoting me on that, look into it for you're self on Google etc (as said above)

Hope this helps

yea, i consider 10-15 reps low, i guess its all depends on the weight thats being lifted compared to your ability.

If your serious about building muscle mass browse some website that deal with it in detail as i dont think many people on here are qualified to give you the same amount of adivce (myself included)

Two miles in just over 11 minutes is pretty good.
How are you over longer distances?

If you want to build big muscles by FLEX magazine it will tell you everything you've ever wanted to know about building big muscles.

Straight legged deadlifts are good for building up your hamstrings.

But if you want to join the forces then I wouldn't waste your time on bodybuilding, it'll hold you back more than it will help you.

And like T_T says 2 miles in just over 11min is a good time, if you keep that up and can imporve you shouldn't have any problems getting into the Forces.

It's always a good idea though to do some endurance runs too rather than just focus on short fast runs that way you'll become an "all rounder"

6km in 30 minutes isn't all that fast. That would give you a time of 16 minutes over the 3.2km.

Incidentally, have you noticed that your 'fast run' and your 'basic run at a steady pace' are both at a five minute per KM pace?

From your post, I can certainly see that you've been reading 'Fighting Fit' though :D

Keep at it, and I'm sure you'll improve.
