People's Sports?

Post by Dave_1987 »

Hi everyone!

I was wandering what sports everyone played and which ones help the best while training for PRMC.

I was thinking about taking up squash as i've heard its really good for fitness and a sport can take some of the boredem out of training.

It would be good if people could write their opinions on their sports and how it helps them train etc.

(obviously football and rugby etc are going to be quite popular so aswell as those, does anyone do anything a bit more uncommon?)

Cheers guys!

No sport, sport is not the best thing if training for PRMC, they just give you a false sense of doing phys, unless your a triathlete. Train using a program, my sport was shooting and that didnt help my phys. Football and rugby you can potentially injury yourself which wil lead to a drop in fitness. Training should be fun and you should enjoy going for runs and stuff, stick to beating your previous run times.

If you were keen on squash it's a good one, lots of short bursts and direction changes.

Hi Felias

I understand that its essential to have a training programme for PRMC and im not surprised that shooting didnt help with phys  but don't you think that you could incorporate a sport into a training programme such as squash on the weekend aswell as running and doing the normal press-ups etc in the week?

I can see how football and rugby could lead to some pretty bad injuries but i think squash is a bit more safer as its a non contact sport (apart from the ball hitting some pretty sensitive areas)

All the best

Boxing is amazing fitness, it's always been mine. Most of it is circuit training which covers everything. Always pushing myself to the limit.

Aye boxing is a good all over body session and you don't have to spar

12 x 2 min best effort sessions on the bags

Group circuits

Run

'Challenge' - ie. Burpees / Clean & Press or some other timed event

That's the usual way our sessions go, and a good description of post session Darren would be gibbering mess

Yep rather true same with tennis, and such great for explosive phys. Boxing is great phys and se eif you can do climbing in your local gym/climbing centre. its fantastic phys.

Same here. Most of the training for boxing involves push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups anyway, so you're still training specifically for the PRMC as well as for the sport.

From what I've heard, RM are massive on sport. To say it's not worth playing football or rugby in preperation for your PRMC may be valid, but what about for when you're in?

athletics, in particular 800m training. good concentrated effort for a few months will see your bleep test/ 3milers scores improve dramatically.
From what i hear boxing for awesome core strength stuff too.
