struggling with pressups

Post by fogarty »

I'm not suer if it's from a previous days exercise or a lack of correct stretching but I occasionally find my pressups quite difficult. The technique is correct I'm sure (elbows in, head up, down to the floor as low as possible) but I just sometimes struggle.

I use to be able to do my sets and repetitions fine until I changed to a slightly different workout (which was fine to start with pressup wise). The one I'm using is the recommended one "prior to commencing young officer training" which week 1 was 3 x 30 pressups and week 2 is 3 x 35. I noticed the struggle most as most other weeks it's about towards the end of the 3rd set I find hard but this came earlier.

Is it normal to find the next weeks sets alot harder? I was fine with the situps, burpees, crunchies and squat jumps.

Thanks for any help.

Your fatigue could be a result of over-training. If you don't give your muscles a break you will notice a decrease in performance as your body burns out. This could be because you are training the muscles used during pressups either too often, or just that your body isn't used to the level of training you are doing.

If you're doing pressups more than every other day then over-training is the most likely answer.

Other than that, try doing your pressups at the start of your routine as other exercises may be contributing to muscle fatigue ie; dips, benchpress, bent over rows, shoulder press etc...

If you don't do many, or any of the aforementioned exercises, then including them in your routine may help improve your pressups.

A non fitness related tip: it's easier to offer advice when you completely understand what someone is saying:
I noticed the struggle most as most other weeks it's about towards the end of the 3rd set I find hard but this came earlier.
If you're thinking about going for YO then you should know that being able to communicate clearly is very important from the outset, and you will be writing a lot of essays.

Thanks for the help.

Sorry for that bizarre use of language there, I was in a bit of a rush.

I figured out what it was. Wasn't leaving enough of a gap between each set. I had a minutes gap which made all the difference.(heard somewhere a while ago that was what you were supposed to do but just ignored it thinking I would be able to push myself through).

Cheers for the help.
