Any service (army) before your 18th birthday does not count. I joined at 17and 7months, my 22yrs were not completed until 40th birthday, so I had to do an extra 113 days. :)

I haven't read any of the posts in this thread yet but here is a picture of the Royal Marines with his wings if it is any help. I know it is the other way round but still http://www.royal-navy.mod.uk/server/sho ... geNav/3611

It's kind of a different thing, wings are to symbolise bring parachute trained, which isn't restricted to the Parachute Regiment.

I guess the equivelant would be a Marine wearing the 16th AA Eagle badge.

From what I understand, the Dagger shows you're searving with 3 Cdo Bge.

When you say Commando Dagger I assume that you are looking at a black dagger on a green square background - possibly on a combat jacket. These are worn by all Royal Marines serving with 3rd Cdo Bge (only). Ranks serving outside the Brigade don't wear them - places like Poole, CTCRM etc. Both wear shoulder flashes however.

Red daggers on a black upside down triangle are worn on the arm by non RM ranks who are cdo trained.

To add to the confusion, many who join CTC (for instance) try to keep the green square badge on their arm as long as possible (usually until the RSM sees them!) so as to save a trip to the tailors shop.

The green square described above is a fairly new, (possible about 4 years) but this badge can be traced back to a point 40 years ago when RM cdo trained ranks only wore green lids when serving in cdo units. If they were at Poole, CTC, Deal etc they wore Blue berets with a red patch - like Nods do now.

As a foot note I find it funny (but nice) that the real old soldiers from WWII wouldn't be seen dead in a green beret - they consider it a new invention!!

From what I understand there are two Commando dagger badges. Those who have passed the Commando course are entitled to wear the red dagger on black background badge. Those who have passed the Commando course and serve in 3 Commando Brigade wear a big green square with black dagger one.

Take a look at FPGRM for example. They wear (or wore) the black background/red dagger badge as they are not part of 3 Cdo Bde. Although I think they now wear their own one now which is like the Brigade one but with 'FPGRM' written on it.

I've known several Commando trained ranks in the Army, who are not serving in 3 Cdo Bde, who wear their dagger.

I've just got back from Afganhistan and noticed that everyone in 3CDO were wearing the the black dagger with green background flash, including the none Commando trained personnel. Except for the Army COMMANDO TRAINED lads who wore the red dagger with black background flash

Maybe not, he has also got what looks like Nav or Gunner AAC or RAF wings on his chest.
This also looks like the DZ safety party checking the wind speed, so they could both be RAF ??.
