Selection, summer or winter?

Post by ease springs »

A little tip , do selection in the summer, as in winter you will be using your muscles in cold conditions, the muscles and ligaments will injure more easily.
You will be fighting not just the selection itself but also cold, snow, ice.
Mountains in the winter suck!, unless you did selection in Kenya, like they used to .......... but then there were the snakes and lions trying to kill you...
SECOND TIP
Try teaming up with someone reliable, they tell you go alone but sometimes there ain't no DS around and walking with a mate for a while helps get your morale up when you might be thinking of quitting, just don't wlk all the way together or let DS see.
Buy a waterproof bag for inside your bergen so you can swim across a river if its gonna save you a few hours, but make sure you got dry clothes in the sack, have fun, you will remember selection all your life

Hi , so did u do selection?, if not then how can u give advice?
Been there done it, got the beret
If you had done it you will know that on early part of selection in the south downs there is a river that if swum will cut your times down [river arun]
Don't give advice unless you have experience
After all I wouldnt give tips about the RE
And continuation is a piece of piss compared with selection
Cheers

Keep the tips coming

Pretty well known that I bummed out on 21, did it far too young! Would have been far better to get some expeience first. Personally I did the summer route and that was the best for me I am not really a cold weather person.... But like you say an experience you will always remember 8) The last winter selection before mine some lads were up on the hills in Wales, March time I think, it was a sunny day when they went up, then had 6" of snow and most ended up hypothermic!! (A bit like my training at Lichfield, also March).

Also there were 2 lads going over the fan, both got lost and fell off somewhere, sadly one died  But the other came back, passed the course and they had an affctionate nickname for him "Lemming" :P

Yup,

Now I'm an old git I can give you young upstarts some advice, hahaha
The MOD compass is an expensive piece of kit, if they still issue it
If you lose it you gotta pay!
We used Silva compasses or something similar, they are cheap and accurate and easier to use .
Buy one, practice with it before selection and use it on the course, your navigation and map reading's got to be hot, or you will fail
I tell it like it is, no bull
2nd
Get a cheapo pair of binoculars and use them on the mountains to keep an eye on other candidates and DS, you know, the mini binos. You got to be one step ahead, right
Be switched on and you are half way there

I am not going agaisnt you here Ease springs but if you did the selection in the summer instead of the winter wouldn't you be against heat-stroke, dehydration, sun burn and those annoying flys? I know it dosn't get very sunny here but there are those few hot days and I think I would rather be in the winter where I will warm up after a while of moving rather then moving around under the sun. So i am guessing spring or autumn would be the best time to do it? Tell me if I am wrong.

yes Stinky,
Spring maybe the best time weatherwise,
summer is my favorite
don't forget you will be walking at night a lot so summer maybe best
But I don't think you understand winter conditions in the mountains, it's not like the high st in december, you can get temperatures of -15 degrees or more with wind chill, and don't forget you are sleeping in snow or on ice often
I was a medic in the training wing selection course directing staff for 12 months. i saw the number of people who failed selections, and believe me it was a case of many more failures in winter selections
Nuff said!!!

Hello ease springs.

Selection on the South Downs? Are you sure you weren't 63? Oh hang on - you were Med attached - don't tell me - you weren't sabre were you?

Hello adj - how's tricks? You dissappeared just before our week away in July and i've only just come back on these boards (it's been a busy year hasn't it?!)

Hope all is well and you're making the big bucks.

Cpt Stabbo.
