Help regarding martial arts

Post by superbuzzmetal »

I still have a couple of months left and I recently discovered a place where I can practice kickboxing or krav maga with a very large discount.
What would be the more appropriate martial art for me ? Some friends told me that krav maga is bullshit and that I should really go to kickboxing, but after reading more about krav maga maybe it would help me better in the future rather than kickboxing ?

Chances are in any fight all you'll ever do is either kick or punch no one uses fancy moves in real life situations.

So kick/punch = kick boxing

I'd probably say the most appropriate would be the one that is taught the best.

In my experience some kickboxing classes are balls and other martial arts classes that don't allow you to practise the techniques in a realistic setting are proper crap aswell.

So if the kickboxing turns out to be not much more then a glorified tai bo class, don't bother. If krav maga means you'll be practising moves on people with no resistance and no sparring I wouldn't bother with that either.

Most of the stuff in a real life situation ends up on the floor where punching and kicking is nigh on useless. Kickboxing in itself is conceived as a sport and so is taught as such. Anyone teaching it with some sort of self-defence slant is deluding themselves and anyone else.

Krav Maga on the other hand is a fighting system developed for the purpose of fighting and utilised all of the tools you have available to you - by which I mean the varying parts of the body which can be used to strike with.

Personally, I cannot remember the last time I really punched in training outside of light sparring. And no more would I ever use a conventional punch to the head or other hard part of someones body because the chances of mushing your knuckles is just too high.

Elbows are the way forward in that respect; a smaller faster movement, delivered on a sharper and harder point with up to 60% more power.

Most fights end up on the floor, 90% (or something along those lines if I remember correctly) infact. My advise, go to a proper self defense class, that not only covers self defense moves but also covers, law, how to defuse situation ect ect. This is true self defense, forget the people who advertise ultimate fighting system as it is bollo*ks, anyone can be beaten and nothing should be portrayed as an ultimate fighting system. Best defense is to run, protect yourself if required with whatever force neccesary for the specific situation, then call the police. Try this site...

Well said - one point I'd make is making the disctinction between running away and self defence:

They are two different things! Your not defending yourself if you run off, your removing yourself from the situation.

Self defence needed when you've no choice but to engage or are forced to by physical agression toward you.

One point that REALLY irks me is the whole "if you get robbed just give them your stuff" thing.

When some smartarse said that they told every idiot with criminal intent toward anyone else that people will just hand over their kit as easy as pie. I honestly beleive this has had an effect on the increase in street robbery in recent times.

Its a tricky situation to handle - but I'm damned sure I'm not giving anything up without a fight.

No not really; because its said if in a conflict, hand over your stuff or leg it if possible. If we always do that the 'fighting another day' thing does not count, because we always run and the punks up to no good know they can try with little fear or reprisal.

I don't beleive in letting the scum on our streets have the power because they expect everyone to just hand over their kit. Someone wants my stuff, they can work for it.

Maybe I'll regret that one day, maybe they will.

Its pretty narrow minded to suggest *I* might get hurt for my attitude and thats why I should just act French; but having said that with the carebear pink fluffy wooly culture we're living in the word 'might' is enough to get anything stopped/influcened/banned etc...

Though I disagree: 10/10 times they are not worth it, but force my hand...

It depends what you want to train martial arts for.

If its actual use. You can do no better than a mix of Mauy Thai, Wrestling and BJJ

However, the average brawler on the street is just gonna rush at you swinging his arms.

Just duck down, double leg, sit on his chest and elbow to your hearts content

Im not saying that if your being mugged you should hand over your hard earned gear or turn and run, in that case, if you capable, beat him into next week.
If its your average Ned/Chav just do your best to turn the other cheek.

Ah I see what your saying now.
I'd not instigate violence unless I thought I was about to be on the receiving end. I will (and have) get involved if somethings happening to others. I'd very much like to go straight to a smack in the chops; don't get me wrong: if someones doing some villanous deed I'd love to dish out a hearty dose of street justice with no direct provocation whatsoever. Truth is I won't initiate anything violent simply because I'd probably end up in prison.

Can you imagine it?

Punk: "Police! This guy just beat on me because I was attempting to commit a criminal act against him!"

Police: "Don't you worry sonny, your a victim, we'll sort it out!"

Judge: "Vigilantism is a heinous and more worse crime than attempted robbery, off to prison for 15 years you go and pay this poor wannabee street robber some compensation too"

But on the self defence note whatever happens, happens.

Well I just want to learn how to fight, I know shit about figthing, giving a proper punch and all that.Last real fight I had it was very goofy I looked like a bear or monkey, I managed ok but still should have get alot better.
Regarding self defense and all, ofcourse I first try to run away, but sometimes that isn't an option. Giving away all your stuff wont save you from a good beating most of the times too, specially when you have a crappy cell phone or usually dont walk with money.
Regarding self defense, I had a friend got into a fight with a mugger, he managed to grab a rock and smash it on the mugger head, the police arrived and arrested not the mugger but my friend, and in the end it was him that had to go to court

This site is called - Military Forums and Training.

What you are discussing is a load of rubbish in that context. You are talking about a sport. It has a minimal value in miltary traing.
Even in SF training.

Please start threads that are relevant to the site.

Touche, but in theory, it works. However, I'm not gonna argue, your reputation preceeds you. :o

The best advice has already been given. If someones enough of an arse to start a fight with you for no reason, its generally better to walk away. Eventually they'll pick a fight with someone who can.
